Flame Up with Cowboy Lump

I bought some Cowboy Lump on sale and thought I'd give it a try on my two cooks on the 4th. The afternoon cook went swimmingly...the evening cook however I experienced severe Flame Up on three (3) seperate occastions, which after the first one (that removed all my arm hair) I was watching for but it appeared to be impossible to stop...thoughts? I did NOTHING different in my position of vents, lighting, amount of lump, etc.

Cowboy is a bit notorious for that.

I've used it 4 or 5 times and have, too, noticed that it tends to flame up more than say, Big Green Egg lump. Still, when I get the fire just right with a 250 low/slow burn, it holds rock steady.

Could it have been grease from the first cook? Just a thought. OT the nest is working out great. Thank You.

You are getting backdraft. When the oxygen depleted air finally meets with air that has oxygen, it burns. Next time try burping the egg, and I usually wear my burn proof gloves to save that arm hair. It usually occurs with higher temp cooks, as opposed to to low temp cooks.

I burp on every opening, always have...still flamed up.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241
