Medium can't fit BGE plate setter and BGE v-rack

I just got the BGE v-rack. Up until now I'd been rigging my butts up on fire bricks and and a smaller circle rack.

I was happy to see the v-rack (which says it will work in the medium) at my Egg dealer today, but when I got home I found I could not close the egg with both it, the grid and the plate setter in place.

One option I'm considering for tomorrow's butts is to is to lose the grid and balance the v-rack precariously atop the plate setter with a thing drip pan under the v-rack.... but this may cause the pork to be too low and close to the heat.

Option number 2 is to lose the plate-setter and replace it with a 12" pizza stone. Though I'm not sure the egg will close with a v-rack on the pizza stone.

Anybody else with a medium worked out a solution ti this?

Option #3 - don't use the V rack. Use the plate setter/drip pan/grate set-up with the butt just sitting on the grate.

It's been a while since I have cooked a butt in my medium,but this is how I did it.I used the platesetter (legs-up)and placed a disposable pan(9x11 I think)on top.Then put the v-rack in the pan.I can't find the picture,but it worked fine.You can also raise the V-rack with a couple thin firebricks or something.Good luck

BTW,the v-rack will fit inverted as a rib rack

That sounds easy. I don't know why I got the idea that I had to have my butt somehow suspended up above the grate.

I need to go for a faster cook tomorrow anyway to beat the rain, so that sounds like the day to do it.

take the fire ring out and set the platesetter on the top of the fire box then your rack will fit in. that is how i use mine. just keep an eye on the level of your lump throughout the cook.

You know what,I just read thirdeyes response,and that might be how I did it.I was thinking of the V-rack,but I think I did that cook in the XL

I rarely use a drip pan,but I cook all the crap off of them later

No rack needed to do butts. Here I have a brisket going under the butts and a drip pan under then t catch the grease.

You are correct. With the V rack and platesetter the V rack hits the dome. However, for indirect with the V rack, don't use the platesetter. Put in the grate, aluminum drip pan (as indirect) and V rack. The dome now closes just fine. You can use Inverted V Rack with the platesetter just fine.

I went with keeping the platesetter and losing the v-rack. But it's good to know there are so many options for the future.

T-storms all night meant I couldn't do an overnight cook anyway, so I'm going for two 4.5 lb butts instead of one big one. Still raining, but the butts are coming along right on schedule.
