extending the grate

I think I just want to get the grate a little higher, when I cook chicken in a marinate with oil I struggle with flare ups. The extended rack is O.K. but it leans on both ends and is smaller than the main grate which ia already too small. I have not been able to convince my wife we need another egg, YET. I was thinking about the woo2 not sure if the adjustable would be better, any input on this would help.
Just for some backround I like to cook thighs and quarters, when I get a flareup it leaves black soot on the food. I have tried closing the bottom vent and the top wide open, that seems to help but it's not perfect. Chicken is cooking at 400 direct and like I said it's an oil marinate

Try doing them indirect with a drip pan. And go direct toward the end.

You could try the Adjustable rig with or without the rig extender. Or maybe try adding another 2 inch fire ring. Just my $.02.
-
Get three fire brick and lay them edge way on the fire ring and then put grate on them. Works great, just did it last night.

Coming from a weber kettle indirect has always been to the side, indirect so far (I am a newbie) has turned out dry ( if you let it sit at all you will need a lot of salt or a lot to drink) :pinch: Are you cooking around the same temps?

some how my reply went under alwaysgolf  so alwaysgolf I looked at that but the dealer price is not that far from a woo2 and the woo2 is closer to felt line or isthata dis-advantage?

get the rig, spider combo. you won't be sorry

Like Fidel said get the rig/spider combo. Much more versatile that the woo2 and can set oval grid at 3 different levels and add other stuff onto it like rig extender to put meat higher in the dome and sliding grid extenders.
-
I will add another vote for the Adjustable rig and spider combo.
I ended up adding the extender with sliding grids, and it is the cats azz!!

Hey trex1210 how do you like the extender and sliding racks, was going to try to sneak that in an order pretty soon.
