Well....I messed up my first butt yesterday morning, and I really couldn't figure out why. I had set-up my fire, and DigiQII and everything was working okay until my last check at 6:15a, and the fire was out. I kept thinking all day yesterday what could have caused it.
I bought two more butts that I put on at 11:00a today, and my fire was steady; however, my temps fell to 225 then 215. I took the DigiQ off, and opened the vents and daisy wheel to get the temp back up, and I was about to toss the DigiQ in the pond...........when all of a sudden it hit me.........I had the fan closed on the DigiQ..........man did I feel really dumb!!
It goes to show you how efficient the egg really is, because it stayed at 235 the night before last for three or four hours without much air at all from the bottom vent.
I guess the saying "you learn something everyday" is true with the Egg as well.

First rule of electrical engineering: Make sure it's plugged in
Second rule of electrical engineering: Make sure it's turned on
I think we can work your misstep into a mechanical engineering rule :P .
Oh, and there's a good reason those rules exist, I might add... -
That works for me............I was very frustrated all day yesterday, because the two times previous that I used the DigiQ it worked like a charm.
I bought it specifically for butts and briskets that might take 12-20 hours..........and it works wonderful if you use it the correct way....grin!!

Don't feel bad, most of us have done it. Luckily my turn I didn't have the meat on nut was getting pissed that the temps wouldn't get up to my target. Looked down and the damper was completely shut on the fan.
Lesson learned on the cheap for me, luckily. -
just remember
"if it were all great, it would all be average" :woohoo: -

As a suggestion, light your lump then let the Guru bring it up to temp, that way you know things are working properly before you put your food in. -RP
