Burnt Gasket and Black Ooze

New to the egg, have had half a dozen cooks so far. I did a T-Rex NY Strip last night (AWESOME), but I continued to cook my gasket.
Here is what I did. Loaded the firebox with lump. Got it going with the firestarter, closed the lid. Bottom and Top are wide open. Temp in the dome got up to 650ish, and then I smell that burning smell. Pull open the lid, and it is oozing black crap all over my beautiful new egg! Continued with the cook, steaks were awesome.
I took some pics -

What do you think the problem is? Is it out of alignment? Anyone know if I should worry about the black ooze - or is there any way to remove/sand it off?
I think I am going to do a Rutland - fiberglass doesn't scare me, I have probably ingested more when I make my surfboards than what will get on the food. Are the directions on the Naked Whiz site up to date? I searched the forum, and there were some posts from 2004 where people were complaining about the adhesive.
Doing some babybacks and ABTs tomorrow!
Thanks

Try the dollar bill test around the egg. You should have resistance when pulling it out. No idea about the black oozing unless it's an after market adhesive. The egg looks to new for buildup.

The black ooze is the remnants of your burnt gasket. Your egg is likely out of alignment a little.
I use the rutland and love it....no issues on my end, but I prefer 600* silicone adhesive to the rutland self-adhesive. -
And remember, no high temp cooks for the first twelve cooks (+400).

I've seen this stated before and I know it's common advice, but on the other hand, Naked Whiz says that there is no break-in period needed (http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm#breakin). Has anybody had any official word from BGE on this and/or done any controlled experiments to show this is necessary?
Thanks.

There should be no break in period, but BGE had a run of gaskets with some adhesive that was letting go if you didn't keep it below 400 for the first few cooks. I'm sure that's been resolved by now. -RP

I just got a new gasket from my dealer today and it's the old felt type...he didn't even know about the Nomex gasket. He claims BGE is still using the felt ones. If that's the case, could the old adhesive still be around?
-
The bad glue was on Eggs made about 2 years ago, so to answer your question, I dunno. -RP
-
so no high cooks for a while with the current setup or is that for the rutland deal?
-any advice on the ooze, just let it be, or is there a way to make it all shiny again (little sand paper???)?
Thanks

are you using standard RTV automotive silicone? If so, Toyota Black silicon is my personal favorite for automotive stuff (non toyota as well, stuff is awesome but 20 bucks a tube).

I know this is hard to believe, but in no time at all the inside of your Egg is going to be all black and you would never even notice that. Just keep on a cookin. -RP
-
I used a generic red 600* RTV silicone.

Having just watched the video, it gives NO instruction or direction around a break in period. Heck, they even have the chef dude doing rib-eyes at high temp with the lid down.
