whoo me and my grandpaw use to sit down late at night and do that. Is that buttermilk or regular? What is the black specks?
-
Okay so I will be the guy to ask what exactly is that??
-
hehehe...that's cornbread and milk dude...the black specs are cracked pepper..normally I just plow regular ol pepper on it, but kinda hooked on the cracked stuff..regular milk Firetruck.. buttermilk str8 makes me kinda sick

My Sainted Mom and Grandmother would kiss you right oin the lips! Not me. Never had the desire to try it. I'm probably really missing out. Mine usually doesn't make it past the butter, cabbage, black eyed pea or red bean stage.

Good looking dessert you've got there. It's even tastier on a cold night in front of a fireplace.

aye SC..and as luck would have it..it's pretty darn cool here in KY tonight..had the fire a blazin while the wiffie watched atonement and I smacked my lips and fought off the dog and cat!! ..both were after my 'dessert' :woohoo:

I ain't too sure 'bout that. There are a couple of Southern culinary traditions that just haven't caught on with me...this is one.
-
Born and breed in the south but never liked it much eather. Thank goodness not buttermilk!!!
-
hehe..yeah..it's definitely an acquired taste...my grandfather started me on it many years ago..I suspect it was born from the depression when many things were combined that normally wouldn't get put together..not for sure bout that..just a guess..but once you acquire the taste, you are hooked for life!..my kids never acquired it..they gag when they see me eatin it!...hehe... :P
-
Look at it this way, more for you then. I love seeing old time traditions. That's what this country was built on.
-
That would win my heart over. Celtic Wolf gave me a batch of his mix in Ocala. But since we got back....Randy and I have been doing this low carb thing...til we go to OKC. But as soon as we're back....I'm gonna make that bread...with a tall glass of milk. Yummmm

Dayum I was trying to avoid it, but now I have to make some so I can properly dispose of it..
-
I never have any cornbread leftover.
Side note-
I made some twice this weekend. I used to make it from scratch. Then tried the Trader Joes box mix and it is better than mine. -
One of my dad's favorite meals!
He often reminds me that cornbread and milk was dinner some nights on the cotton farm in Arkansas.

Well..I wouldnt call it 'leftover'...I call it 'holdover'...I take the first two wedges I cut and set them aside in the kitchen at threat to life and limb of anyone who eats it :woohoo:
