cast iron grill

My Egg is being delivered on Saturday and I bought a large, I’m more careful then smart as it took 15 months to decide on the BGE and another three months to decide on the size. Now I’m so excited I feel like a kid again, my wife thinks I’m nuts but that’s no news flash. The one thing that I have been noticing is a lot of you guys have a cast iron grill. I have always preferred that for a gas grill but mostly for better heat retention but didn’t think the same would apply with the BGE. Would love to get opinions from the experts.

    I've got one but I rarely use it because it's so heavy. If you don't have a nifty heavy duty grid lifter you really have to work at it. Fortunately, I now have a new grid lifter and plan to give it a test drive soon.

    That said, the cast iron sure works nice on steak.

    I say get one and keep it handy.

    I've got cast iron grates for mine and love em. They're great if you like killer grill marks. ;)

    I bought a cast Iron Grid for my Large BGE... It makes killer grill marks. However, it is a pain in the butt to get out (I really need a grill lifter). Anyway, My wife says she doesn't like the grill marks said the dark marks give it a burnt taste. So My large Cast Iron Grid has been used maybe twice in the last year :blush: However, My Mom & Dad have medium BGE and the love the cast iron grid in theirs GO FIGURE! So go with what the wifey likes :silly:

    I can live without grill marks..... Just don't make me do without the eggs ;)

  • As I've learned...but only if I put it on an egg....it's that stuff on the ground and covering my lake I'm tired of....I suppose I could try to boil it all though :) It just isn't melting fast enough on it's own!
  • Not sure what tools and accessories you already have but I would only buy the cast iron after I had some other accessories that are more versatile.
  • You won't need it right away. Play around with the standard egg grill for a few months. Better to spend your money on other accessories or at the butcher's at least for the first while.

    Definitely want one for anything you want to sear...as for the grid lifter, I use the end of my ash tool between the grids to lift it and place it in the egg...I also you the corner of the same tool tipped at an angle to clean the CI grid..so I use this same tool for like 3-4 purposes...
