I'll be in Austin Texas the middle of June and was wondering if any of you have favorite BBQ places. Thanks for your help

  • Hi Mike,
I had some great beef ribs at Ironworks in Austin last time I was there. House Park is cool too but they're only open for lunch. Have fun!

The Salt Lick, The County Line, Rudy's...
  • In Austin proper, Ironworks and Sam's are your best bets. Ben's longbranch on E 11th has great ribs, but brisket is so-so. The County Line, which was recommended, is okay, but I just can't eat barbecue at any place with white tablecloths. Rudy's is a local chain (actually from outside SA) and isn't bad, but you can get better. Ruby's, near the UT campus, is also decent.

If you're willing to drive 30-45 minutes then you have the options of some of the best places anywhere. In Lockhart, Kreuz is legendary and very good, but Chisholm Trail is the lesser known favorite of many locals. Go 10 more miles down 183 to Luling, and Luling City Market is hard to beat.

If you go east of town, Louie Mueller's in Taylor is outstanding, and the sausage from Elgin (either of the places) is very good.

You can also go Southwest of town to Driftwood and hit the Salt Lick. The BBQ isn't the best around (though probably better than you can get most places), but the atmosphere is very good (though it's BYOB).

If you go west of town to Llano, Coopers is very well known, though I have found it to be hit or miss the last few times out there. It's also a farther drive than the others I mentioned.

On the north to far north side of town, we liked Rudy's on 183 for brisket (the extra moist selection) and chicken and Smokey Mo's in Liberty Hill for babybacks and sausage.

County Line is where we took out of towners who expect wait service and full bar, although the food is pretty good there (particularly the smoked prime rib).

  • Hey Ray, good to hear from you. We're going to the ROT motorcycle rally to sell paint jobs in Austin, and I thought I should take advantage of the good BBQ. I looked in your Road Trip book and found some places too. See Ya later man
