I never knew morning doves would eat thistle. I don't know if you can see the picture, but I have two doves on my finch feeder eating the thistle in the tray.
Are you country boys familiar with this?

Hey Ray,
I can only see your pic if I hit reply then scroll down.Is this what happened to you earlier on my post?Just trying to figure it out. -
I am having the same problem but you have a better solution. I was having to cut and paste his jpg. That can take a while if there are several pics. Thanks for the tip.

I can see in narrow view. And yes they will eat just about any seed/grain when hungry. They look quite tastie. A nice batch of bacon wrapped dove breast not over cooked is quite good!

Yes, My friend. Grew up listening to Mourning Dove at my Grandma's in Matador, Texas. The call is hauntingly beautiful. My backyard is now filled with Whitewing, but the sound is the same....still hauntingly beautiful. Thanks for the post.

Don't know about thistle, I know they are partial to corn. I also know I am partial to a fricassee with the aforementioned game bird.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
Happens everyday in my back yard. The finches and the doves share the thistle.

My thistle feeder's tray is not quite as wide at the base as yours so the doves can look quite comical scrunched in there. They are there fairly regularly and while they aren't bullies the finches would just prefer going over to the millet feeder until they leave.
