  • I'm brand new to this forum. I have learned a whole lot from the forum and I haven't had any of the problems that I see posted - just lucky I guess. But I have learned 10 times that amount from sites like yours Wess. TNW, Thirdeye, Trex and your site provide so much information that each time I try something new I revisit for that specific subject. In fact I revisit on the second and third tries as well. And thanks to all the people who have contributed their recipes and experiences to those sites as well, like Mad Max, et al. I apologize if I'm leaving out some recognition.

I guess newbies could bang around and figure it out after throwing out a bunch of mistakes, but why not take advantage of all the lessons learned by so many "Pro Eggers". Sorry for the rant - must be the Jacque Daniel kicking in.

Wish I could make it to the Florida Egg Fest to learn from pros but I'm committed to cleaning up a Bayou along with a bunch of other local fisherman and a Baptism that weekend. I'll sure make it to Austin if there is no major conflict.

Insanity is defined by doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Your guidance and wisdom is appreciated. eatdrink061.gif eatdrink004.gif

    Wess,
I haven't noticed any negativity towards you; in fact just the opposite. Folks are glad to see you post and respond to their posts.
Hell, you are an icon on this forum; and a lot of folks would love it if it was them.
So get off your butt and get to posting instead of sitting at home lurking!
Start by responding to my post to you in this thread and my post on pulled beef!

I appreciate all the work that goes into this site. But I will give you my suggestion. I would like to see a more modern type of format. I like the Idea that it is a free forum and it should stay that way. I would like to know what it costs to maintain a new format. If we had a paypal button to donate, I believe the cost would be covered.

I understand what you're both saying. But, a while back (a year or two) I began to "nudge' once in a while. I got flamed for the trouble. Some noobies think they have the answers when they only have half of it right. Or, in many cases none of it right and the other half wrong!

There's a new crowd here and I can begin to see what happened a few times over the past years. Like water, the IQ level will seek it's own level. No matter how much "nudging" us old timers do we'll get jammed for it.

I haven't been on all that long, but I haven't seen that kind of reaction for the newer people. Other than flaming, I have seen the responses to have very grateful and appreciative.

    Celtic Wolf,
This forum was a big reason for my Egg purchase. I will throw my "not-old-guard-but-huge-forum-fan" support towards anything that keeps the quality of posts up. I have noticed a change in posts and posters as well. [p]It is amazing to me that BGE HQ seemingly does not support the forum. I barely have enough time to visit the forum let alone give up free time as do the current moderators. [p]I have had the same thought but as I consider myself a lurker more than anything I hesitated to post. Was glad to see your post on this topic.[p]Doing my bit to spread the Egg around here in Canada. I am up to three Egg conversions with three pending. I always "sell" the forum while potential converts are chewing away saying "man-this-food-is-awesome".[p]Cheers

<p />Broc, just across the Muddy Mo from Omaha, Eastward in Eden,[p]Yo Broc, I haven't posted here much in, I don't know, maybe the last three or four (months, seasons, years, change of undies, etc). My lack of posting (of which many people are grateful for) had to to with the fact that I started to get a little tired about the trolls (yes, I fed them a few times, I admit). That doesn't change the fact that I still check out the latest postings or what the latest topics are about. I know that there are some still out there who are like me (no not in the weird way) who may be turned off about what they see (be it here on this site, any other site online, or any other aspect of their lives) but if they truly enjoy what it is that brought them here (or elsewhere in life) they will come back, even if they only lurk.[p]Having said that, I would like to offer up some Icy Cold Busch Lights to the many, MANY people who suffered through my questions when I first found this site. Of those there are few names that stand out, Juggy (even though he aint one of us egg-holes, yet) Mr. Doggies, That Naked Dewd and of course that Nature Guy with the twins who are forced to make small spices out of big spices for the award winning (no, I am not a sponsor!!!) Dizzy Pig Company. [p]It was these people and many, MANY more that taught me (or at least they tried) what they had learned from their teachers and elders(lots of props to all of those: from hte names of people online whose names I can't remember to the respectable Older Juggy In Jefferson City).[p]Thanks,
Matt (a.k.a. "South O", as in "South Omaha", as in some guy who evidently lives across the crick from Eden). Brews to all.

  • Wess,

When I saw that post from the anonymous guy the other day I had the perfect reply. I didn't do it cause I wasn't sure of your frame of mind.

    It went like this:

A:hole Wess B is way old enough to be a cranky ol fert! It's only the fact he is married to a much younger woman that makes him appear young. He has contributed more to this craft than you will ever know.

Don't let somebody who doesn't have the bells to identify him/herself chase you away. Everybody here respects and welcomes your participation.

  • Sigh, It's hard to believe that for many years i was a computer geek and now I can't remember how to post a pic of Juggy on my lil egg at Raytown a few years back.[p]

I'm hoping most of the Old Guard has come inside now so they can see some of the posts by the rest of us inside. Being quite a lurker myself, I can understand that but so often when I lurk, it is because I'm unsure of any actual input I may have that is of value.

I would really hate to see or know that all of that good and great experience, whether learned the hard way or so often the way us newbies are able to learn, by reading others successes and mistakes, is not being passed on to us.

Please come back and put up with the changes that you may not like and bless us with all of that experience and wisdom that you have gleened over the years of egging. By keeping your bark thick, you should be able to weather any flaming that is thrown out by those with thin skins.

Well I don't think anyone can call me old guard or a lurker by any strech! I came on board in Sept last year when I got my Medium Egg. There were a lot of names then that you don't see any more or not often. Sad. I see two situations that stir up trouble on this forum. 1) The forum its self as pretaining to lay out and user friendlness. 2) Banning someone and the aftermath among the members at large. The 1st one can't be changed atleast on an individual level. It seams that IE works better than some of the other browsers from what I read. I have never had any trouble. The old forum had its problems also lest we forget. The 2nd one that tends to come about due to "off colored words or slang" ie cussing or extream heated argument. Look I'm a chemical plant operator and biker. Not condoning how I talk a lot of the time but I got a thick shell and your not going to hurt my ears with a couple words.LOL HOWEVER some of us you will. So if we all can keep it civil it will save everyone a lot of grief. I really, really wish the "old farts" would step back up. If I post something misguided PLEASE CORRECT ME. There is no doubt to me that this forum pushes me to try harder and more often. If I can ever figure out how to strap the Egg on the back of the Hog would love to make a "fest" and meet ya'll!!

    Wess,
I see no reason for you to not to post,Bro. I figured you were still milking those six stitches in your foot, and having Sally bring you Crown in between the foot rubs.LOL. 3feet.jpg
You contribute a great amount to our forum. I know we don't own it, but it is what we make of it. Dust settlin' just aint your style. Get back in here with your friends! We need to track down Fidel, Mad Max, Grillgurl and so many others.
  • The new forum. It looks like it's here to stay ... out with the old and in with the new ... didn't I hear that chant once?? ... It looks like the bugs are getting worked out ( I still don't understand that double post / hitting the back key problem?) .... so forward we all go ...... Happy Eggin!

  • I really don't know what "Old Guard" is, but it sure has a nice ring to it. I've been posting since about 1999 when I got mt first Egg, and I still consider myself a "Newbie."

I just know that long before I came along there were Eggheads having a great time on the Forum as they shared recipes, advice, ideas and even each other's aches and pains. They were as eager to help me as I was eager to learn. That meant a lot to me then and still does today.

I truly feel that I've made more friends in those nine years than all the years before.

Technology can improve a lot of things about this Forum but it's the people that makes it work. I can live with technical problems but I can't live without my friends.

  • stike,[p]Much as I am p*ss*d off with the new forum, I thought you made a good point regarding 'FREE'![p]But I also offer a 'FREE' bbq website for other people and they tear strips off me if they don't get what they expect (on an individual basis) - and that's the wonder of our brave new connected world. [p]My problem mainly involves functionality - the new forum is not as intuitive IMNSHO. I think it's geek driven - not BGE enthusiast driven. [p]So what thinks our Uber Geek Celtic Wolf?[p]

An Egg Downunder,[p] The Uber Geek was happy with the old forum, but I don't have a problem with the new one. I guess that can be contributed to the fact I am a Uber Geek. [p] My main concern here is losing the valuable knowledge base that the BGE forum has always enjoyed. [p]To paraphrase a well know Doctor "Dammit Jim I am a BBQ'r not a Geek.." [p] There are FREE software packages out there that are easier to use and will give all the functions needed. phpBB comes to mind. If help is needed to set it up I offer my help

    Celtic Wolf,
Can't make the new side work for me. I used to stop in several times a day and would contribute when I felt I had something useful to add. Been here since 1998, and kinda feel left out with the new changes to be honest. I have not tried to get up to speed lately, but did make several attempts early on to make the switch with no success.

LOL - I think they pulled those stitches too tight. If there were a Poll It would shock me if you were not prominantly on the list.

Your finger experiment sounds a bit adventurious for me. I hope when you see the specialist all is well and the most serious thing you have to deal with is one handed forum checks and adjusting the tightness and or removal of those stiches.

Wasn't too long ago and I had to put the traning wheels back on the 2" brad nailer.

I've tried to get on the new forum numerous times. I can observe but not contribute. I have received three of four new passwords to no avail. Don't know what to do next. Guess just stay here. Like it better anyhow. The new one is too slow. tstick
