How do I light up below the grate?

To try for a hot fire I placed the lighting tabs below the grate. There was insufficient oxygen to even support the lighters.
How do I light the coals from below the grate?

    bonefisher, you're probably using the original ceramic grate aren't you? Switch to a metal one i.e. BGE's own, or a floor drain, Lodge trivet or make one. Anywho...one Weber cube underneath with the vent wide open will get you high in no time. The principle is that of an updraft.

    did you have the bottom vent all the way open? If so, I don't think oxygen was the problem.

    bonefisher, If you have a lot of small pieces of lump they may be blocking the holes. I always light from under the grate and the few times it was slow or not lighting this was the case. The metal grate does help, as was said earlier, but it will work fine with the ceramic one too.
