Fire marshal permits

Fire codes.[p]I haven’t seen one recently, but we have had several posts from people in the past saying they could have a propane grill but not a charcoal grill at their residence. Some of them referenced fire codes. A couple of them said they had to get rid of a BGE they already had because of these rules. I thought I would recount the experience I had yesterday.[p]I went to the fire marshal to get a permit for a cooker here at work. He said that wasn’t a problem, and gave me a permit for a propane grill. [p]I asked him about having a charcoal cooker and he said ‘absolutely not,” along with several quick reasons why charcoal grills were more dangerous than propane, and therefore were not allowed. A few of the points he cited were ‘open flame’, and improper and unsafe disposal of hot coals. All of his points, he said, were addressed in the fire codes.[p]I asked him about a BGE, explained what the BGE is, and he added ‘ceramic cooker’ to the -cooking equipment to be utilized- line on the permit.[p]Sometimes rules are not as all-inclusive as people believe.

every place is different and even the guy in charge reads the rules differently, some even have common sense. i dont need a permit to make an open fire for cooking, make that same fire and just sit next to it and im in the wrong. only rule we have about grills is no grills on a wooden deck, no propane, no charcoal on a deck, and even that is town by town.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Good response! One set of laws do not encompass all the fire laws that prevail. I have homes in two different states, only a few laws are similar; and not exact; but some have relevance.

we had an "open burning" ban. the fire marshall told me (about the chiminea) "go ahead. if anyone gives you trouble, cook a hot dog over it. we can't prohibit you from cooking". seemed weird, but this is yankee-land, where they don't mess with you if you don't mess with them.
i find propane tanks more dangerous (potentially). a charcoal fire unattended (in an egg, anyway) will burn out. i walked away from a gas grill once, came back and all the gunk inside had caught fire. fire coming out the bottom was near the gas line, and tank. a propane tank can explode.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
i've always been afraid of propane tanks just because

A scout leader friend of mine called for a permit to burn a brush pile. It was refused but the person he called knew he was a scout leader. Told him to invite a couple of his scouts over and reminded him scouts always have a campfire and there was no regulations on the size of scouts campfires. Problem solved.

i had an elderly neighbor lose the skin from his elbows down both arms from a grease fire in a propane grill, the grill went up in flames catching the house on fire instantly. his wife, unable to walk, was inside at the time and his only chance was to get the grill off the deck, no grills on a deck is a good rule. he lost part of the house, but never recovered from it.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Socially Unacceptable,
Didn't mean to post the last one. Propane is not good.

I think the Egg is always a different animal.
To those not familiar with the Egg, a charcoal grill can be a flimsy metal dish with red hot coals that could be bumped into and easily overturned onto a flammable wood deck.
The title "Ceramic Cooker" is fantastic! -
On the other hand,
We rent a vacation condo and the balcony/deck has another one above it and another one below. If I had an egg on the balcony, fired it up and left it cranking, the flames shooting out the chimney might torch the balcony above. -
Michael B,[p]There's lots of responses to your post in the new forum.
