The paper towel & oil thing - how to??

My side burner on my gasser is covered in a sheet of ice so I can't use it. I have no firestarter cubes left, no mapp torch.. What is that paper towel & oil trick? I just tried twisting up some paper towels & dunked them in veggie oil, lit 'em and nothing happened. (other than the paper towel burning up)
Haaalp!

That should have done the trick...you just place them where you would normally place the firestarters. You're just supposed to drizzle a little bit of oil on the paper towels, the twist them up. That was what I saw in the picture of the original post last year.
-
I have had paper towels w/oil go out.
Try making a little "house" over your paper towels, that is well ventilated, so the heat from the flame starts lump above. It simply means taking a few more minutes to build the fire, getting lump going, then adding more lump.
I do this all the time -- a little messy, but easy.
I use OO... don't know if this makes a difference...
Good luck!

Do you have a hair-drier? I imagine that could work too.
Oh, wait - are you trying to start the Egg or get it unfrozen? -
I've tried it a couple of times with great results. Just soak the paper towel with veg. oil, light it, drop on the lump, and bridge a few pieces of lump over the top of the fire. I think it goes faster than starer sticks....
-
I'll echo what Basscat said - I just soak the twisted part of the towels in corn or canola oil, put some lump over the top of them and light. First time I did it I was shocked to look out five minutes after lighting to see flames shooting out of the top of my Egg.
-
I even used news papper to start when I ran out of starter blocks. Works ok also.

I was trying to start it.
I gave up.... I dont really want to talk about how I ended up cooking those porterhouses... -
Maybe this will post
-
I gave up after about 5 paper towels...lol better luck next time I guess
-
Okay,
Try thiis:
Then this:
...and then hit it with the mapp gas:
Should work fine:

Hmmm..... I just don't have the touch today. Thanks for the help though!
-
ok - that looks exactly like what I did, but it just didn't take. poooh.
Thanks for the pictorial though - I am not going to give up yet!! (well I will for tonight) -
maybe I'll try OO tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!
-
I've been doing jerky all day. Just pulled the last of it. Have another batch ready for tomorrow.
Ed -
hmph... well it just didn't work. I'm wondering if my lump has "soaked up" moisture from the air (rain/ snow/ rain/ snow) after sitting for so long.
or it could just be operator error......nahhhh.. -
That might have worked better than the paper towels. Maybe I will try that tomorrow.
-
Did you hold it or put it in the lump? :woohoo: I crack my self up sometimes.
Mike -
You tie a knot in it. Soak it with veggie oil. place several of them in your egg under a chunk of lump and light it.
Personally I have gather up a bunch of twigs and shavings and used it as kilning. I would not have put a porterhouse in my oven.. Nope I would have starved first... -
I just lit my Egg again this way and it was roaring withing a couple of minutes....put three soaked towels in a triangle under some lump.
-
stike is not gonna be happy that you didn't print out his posts with this method and tape them to your kitchen cabinet! :woohoo: :P   :silly:
-
that's too much oil.
you don't soak it, just enough to turn the paper translucent.
the point isn't to light the fire with oil, but to allow a little oil to help keep the paper lit. you know when you used to sneak butterd popcorn or potato chips into the movie theater and the paper turned translucent? that's the goal.
-
here's a crazy thought... if you're out of paper towels, how bout just drizzling some oil on a piece of lump? i wonder if that would work. kinda like that match light charcoal? :woohoo:
-
i dunno. maybe.
the oil and paper worktogether. it's not so much that the oil is like starter fluid. it's more about the oil and paper together. a napkin will smolder and go out, and lighting veggie oil ain't exactly easy. but together, they work.
i can see this thing taking on a life of its own, and a year from now someone will be asking "when i pour corn oil into the egg like you are supposed to, do i use a half gallon or a gallon"?
a little oil goes a long way. -
LOL your probably right
-
you ain't kidding....
witness the freakout over zinc in the egg! hahahahaed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
I have an electric starter for backup. Pick one up and as long as you have electricity you can get the lump going.
-
heard it works good on zinc bolts & lead flashing
-
Oh no....here we go again :S
And the same folks that wail about two microns of zinc on a couple of bolts think nothing of sucking on a Zicam or Cold-Eez when they get the sniffles. -
i always spritz a little coleman white gas in there and then fire up the weed burner... stand back, then WHOOSH! instant FIRE!
disclaimer... the above is a joke and nothing but a joke intended for entertainment value only. DO NOT use WHITE GAS to light yer egg. :P -
i concede! the only thing faster than the stoopid paper towel gag is that weedburner.
i'd be tempted to just hit the steaks with it directly.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante
