Fatwood Sticks __Any Pros or Cons ??
EggSport
Posts: 33
I have followed many posts for sometime re. lighting lump in the BGE and have accepted MAPP torch as a fast and easy approach ... EXCEPT that I find it requires less fuel and more consistent lights if I add a chunk of my smoking wood (either pecan or cherry). Today I saw big packs (5lbs) of fatwood sticks at Walmart for just under $9. they look like an ideal size, maybe even cut in half, or thirds for multi-point lighting.
Packaging suggest fireplaces and woodstoves and campfires ... BUT no mention anywhere about cooking fires. Any concerns out there about using these to light fires in BGE regularly?? They emphasize natural, high sap content wood from stumps, etc. Please comment if you have any experience or knowledge of issues (+/-) with these for this BGE use.[p]Regards,
Tom B

I would'nt recommend fatwood at all- very resinous and would give that lovely creosote tinge to the egg, the grid, maybe even the food.
just my $.02 -
NO! I tried some once. When they burn they give off a black nasty smoke. If they don't get enough air to burn cleanly and completely, you will have a nasty pine smell in your cooker for a while. There are all sorts of better options (weber cubes, fireplace starters (sawdust/parafin), fireplace starters (the silver packets with stuff that looks like a weber cube) for that kind of lighting. The Naked Whiz

exactly. when i first got the egg, i tried some that i got for christmas (for the fireplace). they are pretty big, taking a LONG time to burn off, even if cut in half.
the resin is pretty pungent. any unburnt wood in there when you toss on your food would give it a nice Pine-Sol flavor.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
I wouldn't suggest using them for all the reasons already mentioned. I use them exactly what they were intended for.

I'm thinkin' you'd be better off lighting your egg with old motor oil.Haha. There's so much sap in the wood that it would leave a stench in your egg and it would take forever to burn off to a point where you could cook. a resounding "NOOOOO" !

'R' rated?
it's just a clip from one of my favorite cooking shows. that episode still airs on the food channel, in repeats.

Mike in Abita,[p] Thanks for the note. I registered for the 'old' new Forum long ago and it never went anywhere so I gave up. I am moving over now. Thanks for the Thread reference![p]Tom B (EggSport)

 I almost forgot the 'torching' I got when I asked (a year ago) about pine pellets for my other smoker!! The fact that these have not been promoted in the past should have made me wary. Thanks for the prompt warnings and comments. I may just go with the BGE lighters along with the MAPP.

Mapp works for me.
Ohh.... Welcome to the otherside. -
Fatwood is fine for the fireplace or a camp fire but stick with the MAPP gas torch for your egg.
Fatwood has smokey (oily) flavors you do not want in your food! -
Tried it once and not again
