South Whidbey Jazz Band has entered a recording of Kashmir in KZOK's School of the Rock competition. This is a competition asking area high school bands to submit recordings of classic rock tunes. 1st prize is $10,000!!! This would go a long way in our little program.

In order to make the finals South Whidbey needs to place high in a month long internet vote. Here is where you come in. Go to www.schooloftherockcontest.com

and vote for South Whidbey. Each voter is allowed one vote per day per email address. Tell your friends. Vote at work and at home. Vote early and often. Vote from multiple email addresses. Whatever it takes. With a contest name like "School of the Rock", South Whidbey should SO take this one! (For nonWhidbey people, Whidbey Island is referred to by locals as "the rock.") Plus, we ARE the best band and deserve it!

Got my vote. What a tough tune for a jazz band to play...off beat and unique. And the first time I have heard an instrumental of that classic.

Chris, this is why our jazz band is so good. The director picks really unusual songs and also songs the kids want to play. We win a lot of competitions. I can't even believe Mercer has so many votes! They are not one of the top jazz bands in the area. We are considered in the top 2 I think. At competitions, other kids come up to our kids and say, "I wish we could play the kind of songs you play."

Anyway, keep voting every day. Our school is so tiny, we have limited funding. The $10K would be just an amazing thing for our program. It would enable our kids to travel to competitions out of the area.

I can see how the best band wouldn't necessarily win a contest where each email address can vote daily. Especially a small school. Sounds like the Mercer folks have access to many more folks...possibly with multiple emails. This kind of voting seems more like whoever has the most friends, or access to people willing to vote without hearing all the tunes (or maybe hearing none of them). Glad the elections are not run this way!

they had to pull it. Someone (Mercer obviously) had hacked in and probably set up an auto voting program. I blame the sponsors for not setting it up right from the start. I don't know what they'll do now.

It is definitely a popularity thing. I see it as sort of a school spirit deal. There are a lot of regular competitions where the bands play and are judged by pros and all that. We do quite well in those, even tho we're a small school. We have an excellent director. He is well known in school band circles.

Anyway, I will let you guys know if they put the voting thing back up, and I really appreciate the support you gave while it was up prior.
