Adjusting the bands after Rutland install
Wasted Words
Posts: 161
I installed my new Rutland gasket yesterday (hopefully the image works). Everything worked out great. However, I'm getting some smoke bleeding out of one side (back hinge area to about 1/2 way up one side). It's minimal, but it covers about 1/4 of the top.
I did not unspring the bands when I removed them (mainly because I never thought I'd be able to get the springs back on). I loosened the band assembly and removed it in the closed position. During the reinstall the top band opened. I put the lid in the band and returned it to the closed position. I tightened the lower band then the top band. It seemed to fit fine, but I guess I've got a positioning issue? It holds temp. fine and steady. It also shuts down fine.
I plan on loosening the bands and repositioning things, but wanted to check in an see if anyone had this issue when removing the bands. Should I remove the springs? If so, is there an easy (easier, LOL) way?
Also will the loss of smoke/heat in that area damage the Rutland?
Thanks

You can remove the springs - they aren't all that hard to get back on. But it isn't necessary to adjust your bands. Just be careful that the top band doesn't spring open and catch you on its way up.
I would loosen both bands a little. Make sure the bottom band is as low as you can push it and tighten. Then make sure the top band is as high as it can be pushed and as tight as you can get it to the lip on the done and tighten.
If you still have this gap loosen the top band and put a couple quarters on the bottom gasket opposite of where your leak problem is, then close the lid and tighten again.
If you can't sure that leak - as long as you can maintain temps and shut down the egg with no problems, then you have no problem. You will not damage that rutland gasket with the escaping heat from that spot. -
I've only re-installed the BGE gasket, but I had similar problems in the rear (no pun intended). No factory adjustment is available (slotted bolt holes) back there.
The only way I could get it to seat as tightly as the front, was to put a spacer (maybe a wrench or something) in the front, just under the dome handle, while I pushed the back down and re-tightened the bands. Forcing the bands against the lips in the dome and the body is about the best you can do. It did work for me...just took a special effort to get the back seated as well as the front.
Hope this helps. Good luck. -
Here's the pic I was trying to include with the above post...

Thanks I'll give that a try later today or tomorrow. I'm hoping to get started on a table today (need to inspire my neighbor, hee hee).
You inspired me on NYE. I may use this one up today. Let's see if I can get a picture to post.

Actually, this is the one...

Thanks, I'm not off much, but it sounds like the same issue you had. I think the hinge rotated to the front a bit. The spacer may just push it back in place with some elbow grease.

OK, Thanks for you indulgence. I thought I had picture posting figured out. Back to the drawing board!
