How do test to see if the oysters are alive before you cook'em?

heavy, dull thud when clacked (lightly) against each other.[p]most especially, tightly closed shell. they'll open when dead.[p]clean smell, cold, etc. also

If the shell is open at all, odds are the oyster is deceased. Tap on the shell with your oyster knife - if the shell slams shut he was just funnin'. (If oysters play possum, do possums play oyster?).[p]If you can't tell, toss him out. [p]HTH
