Moving a large BGE

I'm moving this month, and I was concerned about moving my BGE. I intended to remove the interior components, clean any ash/soot out of the egg, and put it in the back of a Subaru Outback. It will fit, laying down, with the dome on. The questions I have are: is it advisable to remove the dome by just taking off the lower band, or should it be okay to leave the dome on? Also, does the heat of cooking weaken the ceramic of the interior pieces that I risk breaking them when removing them?[p]Thanks

    You have the right idea in disassembling the egg. You should remove the dome from the base. Make sure that you keep the base from rolling and transport disassembled.[p]As long as the egg is cold, I do not think that ceramics are brittle.[p]KennyG had me babysit his large egg during his move. Mr. Egg arrived in the back of an Escort. It may be advisable to send Mr. Egg to a friend until the move is complete. Movers or friends just will not understand if they cause Humpty to fall off the wall.[p]Hope this helps,

    kjed,[p]My Large Egg and Mini have accumulated over 6,000 miles each via Jet Propelled Aerospace Vehicles.[p]The Large was on a miltary plane, so the details remain highly classified!!! But the Little Guy was packed away in a Rubbermaid Action Packer with about 6 months worth of newspaper and checked as luggage on a commercial flight.[p]The best advice I can offer, Make the Egg the first thing you move or the very last thing you move. Make sure you are the one doing the moving of the Egg or are micro-managing the people who are. [p]When I got to Germany, two well intentioned movers opened the crate (which was still loaded on a truck 4 1/2 feet in the air) and started to take Mr Egg down from the truck,
    one guy grabs the most inviting thing he sees THE HANDLE. Well the Movers couldn't figure out what I was getting on about until I opened the dome and told them the whole thing weighed 75 Kilos and would cost them a shitload of money plus a potential ass-whoopin if they broke it. [p]Moral of the story, [p]Get it out of the way, first or last so some well intentioned soul doesn't do a gravity check with your Egg.[p]Also I wouldn't lay it down on it's side with the firebox and ring/grill still in it. Wrap these up in some newspaper and set'em in the trunk or box it up so they don't get smashed.[p]

    If you decide to remove the dome...the simplest way of doing this is to just remove the 2 bolts from the hinge, that way the bands stay intact and in adjustment plus you wont break any bolts....just my opinion..and this is all assuming you have the auto lock hinge..[p]Wess

    Thanks to all from me for this advice as well. [p]I'm moving in 10 days and have the same dilemma. I plan on personally moving the egg first, via our Suburban, so as to avoid its accidental move by the movers. It only has to go 1.5 miles (less than from the store home), and I'll plan on removing the dome from the base and the inners from the outer, to make carrying it more enjoyable.[p]Regards,[p]--sdb

    kjed, I would take the dome off and wrap the dome and the body in blankets and you`re off and running.[p]Earl and I just transported my egg in the back of his pick-up with the firering and the firebox/grate still inside the body, nothing moved![p]as they say, let er rip![p]Mop!

    Thanks for all the advice. Wess, I didn't know I could just remove the bolts from the hinge; that should make things much easier. I had already decided that no "professional" movers were going to touch my egg. It will be at the new place long before the movers get there.[p]Keith
