Starting with a new XL BGE - HELP!

I just got the XL BGE. Here's my question. It came with two bags of what look like lava rocks that are not listed in the instructions. The dealer was not much help, but say that they believe the lava rock goes in the fire box and the charcoal itself actually goes in through the vent and sits on the bottom of the BGE. That way, they say, the heat is distributed evenly and there is no direct fire under the meat. Can somebody help. I want to use it Saturday for a BBQ. Thanks folks.

    Ray,
Please e-mail me the name of the dealer you got your XL from.[p]I have no idea what lava rocks are doing anywhere near your EGG and the lump does not go in the through the vent.[p]You load the lump through the open dome into the fire box (the bowl shaped ceramic piece at the bottom of the EGG with the holes around the edges) The charcoal grate sits at the bottom of the firebox and holds the lump (the charcoal grate is disc shaped and has several large holes in it).[p]So you should have the firebox sitting on the bottom of the EGG, the charcoal grate sitting on the firebox, the lump goes in the firebox on top of the grate. The fire ring is the ceramic ring shaped piuece that sits on top of the firebox and the cooking grid sits on top of that.[p]Lava rocks go in the bottom of your wife's planter or in your neighbor's gasser.[p]Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you the DVD you should have gotten with your EGG. Don't worry, we'll get you squared away.

    Ray,
you don';t need lava rocks. take them back.[p]you cook direct over the lump for things like steak, burgers, etc. that's for grilling. there are numerous ways to set up for indirect cooks, meaning not over the coals.[p]you got a big ol' XL there. i have no experience with it. check out the naked whiz's BGE page for everthing you'll ever need to know.[p]

Ray,[p] The Lava Rocks go into your gas grill they don't go in the XL.[p] If you want to cook indirect you need to get a Plate Setter. I'd get the Plate Setter from a new dealer. The one you got the egg from is clueless.[p]The Grate goes in the fire box and the fire ring on top of the Fire Grate. The Lump goes on to op the grate till it reaches the fire ring. The Lump so never touch the outside walls of the Egg.
  • Ray,
it's just like your small, but much larger.[p]the lava rocks are for throwing at vermin to keep them away from the egg while you're cooking!

    Rick's Tropical Delight,
I just checked the profile and it's all screwed up. It looks like "Ray" was already in use and the system did not alert me. I'll have to get it fixed.[p]I'm new to the site and to the EGG. I am, however, not new to barbequing, so that is why the lava rock did not make sense to me. The last time I used the stuff was on an old gas grill I had 20 years ago. My last grill, before coming to AZ was a Weber. Cooked and smoked many meals on that old bucket. Actually, I went through 3 of them. Thanks for the help, everyone. It just goes to show you that salespeople should stick to selling, not cooking.

I dont guess there is any chance teh bags of "lava rocks" are actually lump charcoal?
  • Ray,
you've come to the right place for information and direction.[p]i'm a relative newbie myself (sep 06), but these people in here made the learning curve very steep.[p]welcome to the show![p]tell us what you're going to cook first and i'm sure someone will post a hint or two

  • Bobby-Q,[p]This is the kind of expertise I find at the various pool supply stores that carry a few eggs and some tanning beds as sidelines. Most can't find their bottoms with two hands and a flashlight. I drive right by a pool-egg dealer to get to a grill specialty store where the sales staff knows and uses their products.

i just like to eat good stuff and i don't like going to a restaurant by myself so i have no choice but to be the best cook i can be.[p]so i guess at 4 months now with the egg i'm a novice instead of a relative newbie?
