Rusty Metal Cap

My cap is rusty now even though I have a cover. I don't use the other green cap that came with it I just leave the metal cap on.
Do I need to clean it it doesn't look like it would hurt my cooking but I liked it when it was new looking?
The weather is better here the last few days but I have been cooking on the egg even with the snow. Splatcocked chicken or whatever you spell it was aewsome I do that twice a week all the time.

I had the same problem. I wire brushed off the rust and hit it with flat black high temp Rustolium paint .... twice. It looks great and the paint has not given way.

Scrub all the loose rust off, wet with oil and bake in oven (or egg) for 30 minutes at 350. Repeat a couple of times and it will be as good as new. Keep in the egg when not used to avoid this happening again.

Put the metal one in while the Egg is still hot/warm, then shut your bottom vent and put the ceramic cap on the top, residual warm, greasy atmosphere will prevent any rust. I do this with my CI grid also, whether I have used it or not. No rust on anything, and I'm in Florida where CI will rust while you are looking at it!!
I wish I could put my toolbox in the Egg :P !
