My "custom" 2nd level setup

thanks to everyone who shared their setups for raised grid. I took inspiration from these threads and constructed mine for my XL Egg
I used 3/8"x 4" carriage bolts, fender washers, nuts (I installed bolts upside down on main grate, threads to the dome. These stay in place) and wing nuts (wing nuts threaded on upside down, topped with a fender washer) and an 18" Weber cooking grid. The 18" grid can be removed for ease of loading. The wing nuts can be spun up/down to raise/lower grate
i also removed the dome thermometer and reinserted it with clip on outside of the Egg (so it didn't pierce food on upper grid)
unique to my setup is I am working off a KJ Divide N Conquer setup, so my main grate is at the felt line already
hope this thread helps out the next Egger!

Looks great.
Honestly, I never would have thought to nut and bolt to the main grate and float the upper grate. Thoughts?Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Call me crazy but what if you did it the other way around and bolted it to the top grid so that you don't have hose bolts in your way when you don't need the second level?

For this cook-- worked well.
I also have the original grate (for the Egg) I can swap out it I dont need 2nd level but do need the whole grate without the bolts in the way...

Another plus bolting to raised grid would allow you to use it with your BGE grate as well.

If you want to keep the thermometer clip on the inside for safety, drill a hole through a wine bottle cork (lengthwise) and use it as a spacer by putting it on thermometer stem on outside. I never seem to have a shortage of spacers.
