Hi everyone!
just bought my first kamado, a Large Egg! Made some awesome fillet mignon and sausage with Brussel sprouts yesterday.
Question- saw a video where the owner said you should cook a bag of lump before smoking, so the ceramic gets seasoned. If you smoke too soon, the ceramic will get infused with the smoke chip scent.
Is that true?

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Above all, have fun.
And as above-go forth and smoke away.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
That's pretty funny, maybe the best myth I've heard yet.
There are some folks that buy eggs that they dedicate to just baking and they keep them pristine, but that's not what you're doing.
Egg on. With smoke. -
Smoke it! I remember when i was this careful... now it's covered with grease and I love it!!!

There are some BGE owners that will foist BS quantum physics advice, and this little tidbit is a good example.

Agreed. I don't know why this YouTube guy said his dealer told him to run a bag of lump through first before smoking!Large Egg

After being married a few years, wife asks her mother why she was taught to cut the end off every roast before cooking. The mother says she doesn't know, but has always done it that way. That was how the grandmother had taught her. So they eventually ask the the grandmother, who just laughs. Turns out, the only reason she did it was to make the roast fit her only pan.
I suspect there are other things we do for no good reason, like running a bag of lump through to season an egg.
Cook away, congrats on your new egg, and welcome.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
I wouldn't take it nuclear right away, but there is nothing about "seasoning it" in any of the dealer training or anywhere I've seen.
