Temperature Controller advice

I just got an egg for Christmas.  I am wanting to buy a temperature controller. I have looked at the Flame Boss 200 and the Digiq. What do you guys think of them? What's the difference in the green digiq and the black digiq other that the $200 price difference?

I'm in the Stoker camp. I have had them for 3-4 years. They are a bit technical to setup but I can have as many meat and temp probes as I want.

I have a BBQ Guru Digiq DX2. There is a BGE branded one that is green and has a picture of an Egg on it and is usually 20-25 dollars more expensive than buying it direct or through a retailer which give you more color choices (green, red, blue, black). Performance-wise it is great, and was at one point the gold standard of temperature controllers. Rock solid performance. Mine took a tumble, and due to its construction, still works fine.

That said, when I get the funds, I will eventually spring for a Flame Boss 300. Digiq has no wifi (need CyberQ for that). I don't want to get out of bed in the middle of the night and check status of my cook because I can't see or hear the audio alarms or the LCD. A unit with wifi, I can check on my smart phone, get data from the cook, and be alerted to events without needing to go outside. This is great when the weather is not as warm as well.

Conventional wisdom says that you should learn to control your egg without a crutch first. Then, if you still feel that you want/need one, fine. But you will know how to do it should the need arise.

I waited a year or two and then bought a DigiQ. If I had it to do again, I wouldn't have one at all. Nothing wrong with the DigiQ, but 1) I just don't use it as often as I thought I would, certainly not enough to justify the cost and 2) now that I have "discovered" turbo cooking, there are no more overnight cooks anyway. I can just check it from time to time during the day. It is almost always right where I left it. Last butt I cooked started about 10AM and finished around 5 or 6. At 300° as I recall, maybe 320°. No crutch needed.

I just don't see the need for wifi. I NEVER cook when I'm not at home. It's just not a safe idea. And if I'm always home, why do I need wifi? I can somehow manage to drag my lazy butt off the couch to go check on things from time to time. I see no benefit to wifi. Apparently others disagree.

I haven't been to a BGE dealer since I bought my egg in 2009 so I don't know what all is available. Are you saying that the BGE branded DigiQ is $200 more than the BBQ Guru one?! Seriously?! I know BGE bumps up the price whenever their logo goes on something, but 200 bucks?! You gotta really like green Kool Aid to pay that. They are the same device. According to https://www.bbqguru.com/storenav , both black and green are $197 with fan and egg adapter.

    Good luck with your decision.

I agree with @Carolina Q you should learn temp control, both low and medium temp control first. And I never leave my house when I have a lit Egg. So wifi away from home doesn't matter to me. Some like to turbo cook and others like me have done it and still prefer low and slow. I have and still cook both ways. A blower setup does make it a bit more "Set it and fight it" but you still need to be on top of it.

I like being at the helm for the cook. I like going outside and checking on the egg and making an adjustment here or there.  Makes me feel like I'm really cooking! Even though the egg tends to lock into cruise control leaving little to do. But if was to buy............spending less money for the same product leave more budget for meat and beer!

If you know a few vent settings, and know roughly how long something takes to cook, you don't need one.

OTOH - I have a FB200 and like it a lot  Easy to use and it works really well.  Glad I have it.

DigiQ + a baby monitor (my redneck fix for it not being wifi) works very well for me. I like turbo when required but usually go with a good overnight cook. Just feels more like traditional BBQ..

If you just want to remotely monitor temp while at home get a maverick, smoke or any other brand in that space.  If you want to control temp. flameboss seems to be the popular route these days. I have a digiQ2 and I like it, I rarely use it, but I like it when I do.  If you like chart porn and you are a techy guy who likes that stuff then get something that charts that stuff for you.

I got my maverick after my digiQ and really could have just bought that and been fine.  I mostly just want something to wake me up if something is wrong and the maverick works just fine for that purpose.  But I had spent the $600 on the digiQ (I bought it well before the price drop) and I'm going to use the GD thing no matter what now.

The main thing I enjoy about having WiFi controllers and thermos is they make logging data of each long cook automatic.

I find it useful to be able to look at a graph (current or archived) of a cook and see what is/was going on with the fire, is there/was there a stall, etc.

    I agree with @Carolina Q.

More than that, I've never felt like I've needed to get one anyway.  I've had 2 Eggs for a number of years, and still have no controller.  The snazziest thing I have is a Maverick remote thermometer, and I find that really handy, because I don't have to keep going out and checking the temps on low-and-slow cooks.  But I find the BGE amazingly stable on temps, and the only thing I can imagine wanting a controller for is an overnight cook, but I'm sorry, like some others, here, I'm just not going to light a fire near my house and then leave the house or go to sleep.  Not happening.  I see no advantage to 200° or even 225° dome temps, usually cook 250°-275° for a low and slow, so I really don't need to go overnight.

By all means, if you want one, anyway, it's your money!  But it's a nice feeling that you know what you're doing and you know how to control the fire.

I just got the Flame boss 300, my wife surprised me. I had a digi q before that for overnight cooks or when I am working around the house on stuff and don't have all day to check it.  I like the idea of being able to view it remotely from work while cooking at home.  I am doing a brisket overnight starting at midnight tomorrow for a dinner party Wednesday.  as for wireless thermometer I had a maverick and after a year it quit working so after much reading I bought the Thermoworks Smoke.  it is a great thermometer for every day cooks.

I shut off all the utilities to my house when I go to work. Can never be too careful. :)

Like others have mentioned above, learn how to go low and slow before you depend on a temperature controller. I've cooked at rib contests where their power cords have stopped working or gone to crap. Good to know for the what ifs....

I started with the Auber Instruments PID controller. It's a basic controller that doesn't do anything fancy but will keep your egg chugging along at night while you sleep. I used it for around 5 years. Great value for $100 at the time

My second controller was a DigiQ that I picked up from another forum member for $25 minus the fan. I just switched my Auber fan over to the DigiQ. I enjoyed the DigiQ as it also gave me a meat probe where the Auber Instruments only controlled the grill itself. (No internal meat readings)

I picked up the Stoker Wifi about a year ago. It was a paper weight for the first six months. I couldn't figure out how to hook it up with wifi. I had some outstanding help here on the forum and they got me up and running. I had to reconfigure it about a month ago and I was able to figure it out. Only from all the great help the first go around. This controller is awesome! It was a huge headache at first but it was also my fault as I lack any skills with computers. The Stoker rocks! I'm able to check everything from my phone from wherever I need to be. Last Thanksgiving I sat at my parents dinner table eating turkey while I had another turkey cooking in the egg at home. I was able to monitor the turkey 10 miles away and pick it up and drop it off for a family in need when done. I couldn't have done it without the Stoker. Zero regrets with purchasing the Stoker.

My last pit controller is the PartyQ. I bought it from my buddy when he sold me his Bubba Keg. I like how this controller uses batteries. It will come in handy for competitions. Nothing fancy. It's similar to the Auber Instruments. No meat probe but keeps the egg chugging along.

Lots of options out there for temp controllers. All kinds of different options. From something simple that let's you sleep at night to charts and graphs. Most of all, have fun!

I have a maverick and use it rarely . The eggs run so steady that I've never needed a controller. I don't even use the maverick much just a thermapop. Hands on is nice

Don't let the master cook snobs dissuade you j/k. ;)
I certainly don't need a controller ,but I'm lazy as heck so I don't regret getting mine one bit.

    I have a Stoker Wifi.
I really like it. It is a bit technical as @Hotch said.
The beauty of it is it's so versatile. I'm currently using it for remote temp monitoring of another smoker I have, rather than temp control. It's great to be able to use multiple probes for monitoring.
I finally solved all the Wifi setup issues that I was having. The solution was setting up an open guest network that is only accessible by the Stoker's MAC address. It's locked down to only the Stoker. This solves all the security encryption/password problems that I was having.

The Stoker is a really nice device that you can grow with. It can control multiple eggs at the same time if the need arises, provided you have the additional fans and sensors.

Flamboss is my vote, but you may want to consider the 300.
