Using a torch does have some sparks and ember explosions that can be worrisome, but found the solution to be some second burn lump on the top, no sparks and catches quickly.
@fishlessman - could it be the torch you used? Bernzomatic is just fine, use it for copper pipe repair all the time, in fact Bernzomatic makes an extention hose that keeps the gas cylinder upright so you can use the torch in any position. -

And what is an "extended time"? I never need more than maybe 30-40 seconds or so and the lump is lit.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I will stick with my looftlighter but my plug is only a few feet from the egg. I have paper towels and cooking oil in case the power is off.

Boom. Pow. I use an oxygen acetylene set quite frequently along with several mapp rigs. For obvious reasons safety is important. But waking up in the morning is dangerous too. Use at your own risk and be smart about how you use it. Pretty simple if you ask me.
Note: @HuddleHouseCook was quickly stopped by me to get his safety glasses on.

This is what I use. Gets me away from sparks and no issues with upside down bottles.

I used and loved one of those cane-shaped weed burners for about a year. Then one day as I was lighting the Egg, the flame disappeared from the mouth of the cane, and reappeared at the mouth of the connection with the propane bottle. I screwed it shut fast, put it down, and threw it away after I was sure it wasn't going to blow me up. I have been using olive oil soaked paper towels for the past four years.
I do miss how quickly the propane torch got things started, and a map-pro head might be my next attempt. -

@SkySaw I've got 2 different types of mapp gas heads for the small cylinders. Neither compares to the weed burner, fwiw.

I was very much sold on the weedburner for lighting the large and small. Used starter cubes for the mini. But I goofed and got the one with the built-in sparker when I bought it at HF a few years ago, so always had to have a lighter to get the torch going. And it was unwieldy to schlep around the yard for my other cookers.
Got the MAP torch 2 years ago, and that's been my go to ever since. Built in sparker, works with all of my cookers, and easy to move around the yard as well as pack in my box for eggfests. Love it.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

Sorry, that link has the squeeze valve which adds about 60$. That's my torch, but I don't have the valve. I think a 100k btu torch would be more than adequate. (I had mine pre-egg for another application)
If I were to do it again I'd probably get this one @ 56.75

Welcome to the zoo.
I got mine at Lowe's, though I bought the kit (MAP-PRO canister and the torch) before I knew that cheap propane was fine. HD or most any hardware store should have 'em too.

The fat (harder to tip over) 16 oz propane cylinders can be found lots of places. Walmart is probably the cheapest, but Lowe's has them as well.

@SkySaw I bought a mapp head kit recently ...
HomeDepot ca $78.48
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.bz8000kc---premium-torch-kit.1000539664.html
Lowes ca $87.99
https://www.lowes.ca/torch-kits/bernzomatic-high-intensity-trigger-start-torch-kit_g1441127.html?searchTerm=bernzomatic
Lowes brick-n-mortar refused to price match due to different packaging although contents are identical. Chatted with Lowes online and had no problem getting it for $70.63+tax (with their beat the competition by 10% policy).
This is probably as good or better deal than buying just the head without mapp cartridge. I'm saving the mapp for project that needs the extra heat because I still have about ten new propane cartridges!

@SkySaw Actually I found the recommended weedburners at this one-man shop near where you work, $39.99 for the big one with three nozzles, runs off 20lb cylinder, and $29.99 for the small one that runs off bottle. You may want to check them out during lunch or after work?
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-plumbing-sink-toilet-shower/city-of-toronto/brand-new-propane-torch-w-2-extra-nozzle/358628954?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
If you still want the mapp it's really easy to pricematch, just send the HD url to Lowes CSR during the chat, you can pick up in 1-2 hours at any location that has stock.
edit: what happened to your 'cane'? sounds like the $29 unit above.

I like the cane. It keeps my eyes and shirt a good distance away from any sparks. I find passing the flame all over the lump for a few seconds cuts down on the time it takes to burn off any bad smoke. -
