Need help with new handles for XL and L

You can make fun of me if you want to, wife always does, but I need to replace the wood handles on my XL and L, both predate 2010 and look to be the same size.  Just looking for some advice.  I searched threads here and didn't really locate much as the word "handle" is used in association with everything but the handle I need.

Appreciate the help, and thanks.

The DudeThis is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

  • I am assuming that you have the smaller handles that are about 6inches across?

They do have replacement handles for them, call over to Roswell Hardware and see if they have the smaller handles.  I know they have the larger ones....

How about a custom made handle? Alot of us around here have them. Check out this site and it will give you some ideas, mine is even pictured there. I'm not sure if Danny is still making them, but maybe someone else will chime in and point you in the right direction if you want a custom one.

Roswell ain't got em and neither does Buford, both said they aren't made anymore.  I could replace the bands on both for about $325 total..... ya, no.  Buford ACE said he thinks the new small will fit the old L and XL.  Thankfully i have a small to do that comparison at home but I think I would have noticed that.

  • Use the handles you have as a template and make some yourself. I recently did this for an older egg that I rehabbed and it was quite easy. I believe the handles are 3.5" or 4" long and about 3/4" thick. You just need to counter sink the holes for the bolts and apply liberal amounts of sealant and you'll be good to go.

The new wooden handle for the mini/small/medium will fit the older Large Egg (just installed one).
Looks better and only ~$15 from a BGE dealer.
(and apply some polyurethane before installing)

Are you sure?  Older large egg handles look like this:

Or maybe I should call this an ancient egg?  :)

That's pretty bada$$ nola. Gotta admit though, I haven't got the woodworking tools that you do. I'm more like Anthony Michael Hall in that my elephant lamp didn't light up in shop class.

Pm me your email. I know I have seen them somewhere recently. I'll check some places that I drive by daily to see if they have 'em. Was it 1 or 2 that you were looking for?

Need 2. One for Large, one for XL.

Really? The new long wooden ones will fit on the older ones like these?

Yes, but not the one for the new Large Egg.
Need to get the one that's listed for new a mini/small/medium for the old large.
Just installed one for my nephew.  (need to screw the new one on from the back — and I was able to do it without removing the metal handle from the band)
