Drilling a hole in the mini

Hi--
First off, a big thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and ideas on this forum. I'm a faithfully obsessed reader even to the point that my wife thinks I need some sort of intervention. I often hear her calling late at night from our bedroom, Jake!! Stop lookin at that egg porn and come to bed. Thanks again for all the great stuff. [p]Now for my dilema, I purchased a used mini last weekend to accompany my large egg, which was suffering from seperation anxiety as he was taken from his brother's and sister's at the Pickup Palace a mere 5 months ago. After futher inspection to verify true kinship I deduced a significant genetic defect!!! The mini is without a hole to insert the thermometer. Has anyone ever had to drill a hole for a 2.5 inch stem Tel-Tru thermometer? I don't want to hurt the mini's ceramic shell as a cracked egg is not an option. Perhaps, the mini doesn't even need one? Help would be appreciated. [p]Smokn KC

    Jake,[p]My mini has a hole, but no thermometer. Maybe it's just my opinion, but I don't think it's needed. [p]I use the mini for steaks, burgers, sausage and the likes. I did once do a small butt (just to say I did it), but for me, it's a grill, not a smoker.[p]I would pass of a thermometer![p]Smokey

    Needing a t-meter is another story, but I have drilled many a hole in gardening pots both glazed and terracotta. I have used my bit on tile and other ceramics. I work w/ Bonsai pots and they are sometimes a little pricy. I personally wouldn't hesitate. I have a 1/4 in. carbide bit that I think I bought at a tile store... Home Depot may have them too. I haven't ruined anything yet, but I'd caution: Don't get in a big hurry.[p]Phil, hopefully, D' Helpful Duck[p]

    Pretty sure that the thermometer is not needed on the mini. It has to deal with the thermal pressure that increases with the smaller interior volume, not to get too technical. Anyhow, keep rockin' the green egg and ham.

    I have never heard of " thermal pressure". What is it? Why does it apply only to a small egg? If Jake wants to know the temp inside his egg it doesn't matter what size it is. All he needs to do is take a ceramic drill and slowly and carefully drill a small hole for the thermometer.
    Being able to monitor the temp of any cooker is better than
    just guessing.

    Jake,[p]A masonry bit will do the job just fine. Take it slow and finish by beveling the edges so the ceramic does not crack in the future. A countersink bit will work well for that. Don't bevel too deep, just a light touch here.[p]Good luck.

    Jake,[p]I've heard but never tried the idea of coating your egg with Aveda hair conditioner will preserve the finish. What do you think?[p]frogMan
