Looks like I'm going to be in Durham the end of December for business.
Any local bbq joints to hit?
Also, any local bars to patronize. I don't care for chain restaurant/bars.

I haven't been there yet, but Picnic is supposedly the best new BBQ restaurant in the area. If you're open to something other than BBQ, I would recommend Vin Rouge for French bistro (and at the very least go and get an order of their Bacon Confiture) or Mateo for tapas.
Rose's is a fun spot, I've had good luck with their sandwiches. I couldn't find a page to link for them, but there is a very good, classically French bakery by the Costco, right off I-85.LBGE

I went to Picnic and it was pretty good. The Q was real good. Sides were okay.
Allen & Son is in Chapel Hill, which isn't far from Durham.
The Pit in Durham isn't bad I hear. Never been there personally.------------------------------

Of all the BBQ joints in Durham, Picnic is the best! Q Shack comes in second. I personally think I make the best BBQ on the Big Green Egg in Durham, just saying!!Retired Navy, LBGE

Never been to Picnic. But it's new and all the rage. The Pit is good but overpriced, by a lot. I consider it a tourist trap honestly. I'll recommend Backyard BBQ and Allen & Sons.
Bars? I'll recommend Fullsteam Brewery.
Ok so I said the Pit is overpriced. If you want a delicious seafood lunch at a ridiculously high price, sold out of shed with no seating but a few picnic tables, check out the Saltbox.
