Heading to KC next weekend for the Jets game. Suggestions on places not to miss, BBQ or otherwise (even if not food related)? Have all day Saturday available. Doing the stadium tour pre-game. Thanks!

Q39 and it's not even close IMO.  (Ribs, burnt ends, sausage) Don't get sucked into the Arthur Bryant's and Joes tourist traps.

Not sure I would do the stadium tour pre game. You'll be missing out on the best tailgating in the country. It's safe wearing a jets jersey too.

Edit. I would make reservations online so you can sit down right away. The wait can easily be 2-3 hours on Saturday.

This is a big question with many answers.  Depending on where your coming from and how long in what area you will be hanging out before the game.  Here is a short list but not in any particular order.  Try Gates BBQ, LC's, Jack Stacks, Arthur Bryants, Rosdales, The Wood Shed... There are many others but it depends on what area you will be spending most of your time in.

Staying near the airport, but will have a car. Happy to drive somewhere if it's worth it. Thanks!

Also, the parking is a nightmare even though there are some 30,000 parking spots. Get there early.

Staying near the airport will make a good drive to get to the stadium.  I suggest trying Gates BBQ.  LCs is a little hole in the wall but is close to the stadium.  Both have good food.  If you want a nice dine in with bar type of setup, try Jack Stacks on the plaza.  Nice shopping and a nice bar too.  There are many good places to try, so it is hard to just say one.

I really enjoyed Gates BBQ when I visited. Also a real quirky bar called Grinders that I saw on Diners, Drive ins and Dives. I loved that place!

I like Jack Stack (Martin City vs any of the other locations) and The Filling Station in downtown Lee's Summit,MO. Smokehouse is decent, there are some others on the KCK side ma-pa types that are good.

I've been to Arthur Bryants......yuck and in a BAD part of town.  It was cool seeing all the photos on the wall though.  Definitely a tourist trap and place for politicians to be seen when they're campaigning.

Jack Stacks was good, but nothing special.  I should have gone to Lydia's next door.  It's across from Union Station which is worth a walk through.

Oklahoma Joe's / KC Joe's had really good ribs.  Brisket and pulled pork were good, but again nothing special.

Just like anywhere else, when they have to produce that much, it's never going to be perfect or fabulous every time (or ever).  A fine line Quantity vs Quality is walked in the restaurant industry.  But is doesn't help that here we're all BBQ snobs and can usually do better at home.  I'm always out on the comp circuit with our sponsored teams, plus I'm a judge, so I've had pretty incredible stuff........hard to go into a restaurant knowing I'm going to PAY for a lesser quality.

BTW, The place to go......Pigwich.  It's a food truck located next to Local Pig butcher shop down in the northern flood plane by the casino.  AWESOME sandwiches.  Very creative, all with locally sourced every thing.  Neat place--just like Bolyard's here in St. Louis.

If you get a chance, hit the Airline History Museum and TWA Museum at KC downtown airport.  The WWI Museum is worth the hefty price of admission, but plan on spending a whole day there.  Just south is the Federal Reserve and they have a free self guided tour on weekdays--very cool.  I hear the Boulevard Brewery tour is good too.

Q 39 would be my first choice, ( reservations have become a must) Q 39's brisket and ribs are outstanding. Brisket is thicker sliced ,more like in Austin Tx.rather than thin that is typical of KC. Joe's Kansas City (closed on Sunday's) has great ribs and dont let the lign scare you, it moves quick. Jack's Stack is another good one I would avoid Arthur Bryant's. Nothing about the place is as good as it once was. Sold to corporate types that are living off a name. If you can't get a reservation at Q 39 get it to go and tailgate at Arrowhead.

Everyone has already mentioned bbq places I would list, but I want to second Pigwich. Great place for a cheap lunch. Sandwich/chip/soda combo for $8 after tax!

another place to check out is Anton's. Steakhouse doing some really cool stuff. You order by cut, weight, aged or unaged, and grass or grain fed. https://antonskc.com/

My number one place to go to is Q39, but like @bhedges1987 said get there earlier on a Saturday.  Get some ribs and their chicken wings as an appitizer.  You can get one of their combo's to try other meats.  Jack's Stack to me is overpriced for what you get.  I like Arthur Bryant's, but Gates is an interesting experience.  They say "Hi May I Help You" as you walk in the door.  If you are looking to stay close to the airport there is Smokehouse BBQ that is good in Zona Rosa.  I have been hearing good things about Chops BBQ in Smithfield, Mo that is about 15 minutes from the airport.  I helped one of my brother-in-law at BBQ contest this Sat and he said it is good and so did Joe Pearce of Squeal like a Pig BBQ said it was good.  There are a lot of choices.  Have fun in our time city.

Jack Stacks used to be my favorite because I absolutely love their beans and cheesy corn bake but then I had Q39's ribs and it was by far the best BBQ I have ever had.

The upshot - you've got a 99+% chance of getting good BBQ while you're here - as long as you stay away from chains.  Bad BBQ joints don't last too long around these parts.
I would second the recommendations above.  Mine and my family's faves include:

Jack's Stack - Sides are killer - cheezy corn, beans, O-rings
Joe's KC - Z Man sandwich!! Nuff said.
CharBar - a newer, uptake of BBQ offerings
BB's Lawnside BBQ - great blues music, and some solid BBQ
LC's - if your BBQ is so good you have to chain your grill to the light pole... just sayin'...  it's a total dive, but daaaang... good burnt ends and spicy green beans
Brobek's - a little tucked away joint in Leawood - they're sauce agnostic - if ya want Gate's Hot or Bryant's Original sauce - it's over there on the table.

There's a lot of other good ones out there - like I said - hard to fail...

Enjoy your trip and your discovery of REAL barbeque! And Go Chiefs!

I also vote for Q39. Their burnt ends appetizer is fantastic. If you wanted to stay up farther north I have had good luck with Smokin Guns in North Kansas City. If you need a place to stop and have a beer on the way into the stadium feel free to stop by my tailgate. Just send me a pm and I can give you my info.

BTW, the Filling Station in Lee's Summit (about 20 minutes from the stadium(s)) is an old Texaco Filling Station. (no gas sold - but plenty produced. Their beans and coleslaw are very good). And a  side note. Their "HOT" sauce is "take the paint off your car hot".  I lived in TX and have eaten in NM and AZ. That stuff is HOT.

Thanks, everyone. Made a reservation at Q39 for lunch and Anton's for dinner. I prefer a porterhouse to a sirloin, so I opted for Anton's over Pierpont's. Plus Anton's is open later.  =)

I'm jealous, live Q39 and I haven't even been to Anton's yet.  Let me know how it is, I don't go out much for steak because what I can make on the Egg is better then most the restaurants I have been to in KC, except Piedmont's and Piropos.  Enjoy and GO CHIEFS!

mmmmm the empanadas at piropos are so good.

You did ask about something to do while your here.  Our GREAT haunted houses just opened until Halloween.  You will be about 2 minutes away when your at Anton's.  They're only open nights.

They converted some old run-down buildings downtown.  Check out the beast and the edge of hell combo pack (though if you had to choose 1 it would be The Beast).  Would be perfect timing to go before lines get crazy long closer to halloween.  @HofstraJet

I'm at Q39. No burnt ends appetizer at lunch.   :o

So to get ribs, sausage, brisket and burnt ends, need to order two meals. So be it. YOLO

Should have gone to Anton's for lunch and Q39 for dinner.  =)

PS - Place is packed and just opened. Love it.
