Anyone have any experiences from any of the famous  meat markets? Any items I must try? Particular market?

If you are going with Lockhart, we prefer Blacks over Smitty's or Kreuz.

I agree with Griffin, Blacks is the best place in Lockhart, followed by Kreuz.  I wouldn't say their sausage is worth mail order though.  They are more known for brisket and beef ribs.

I very rarely get sausage at BBQ joints though just because good sausage is easy to find, and there is not much difference between good sausage and great sausage.  Brisket on the other hand, there is a huge difference in quality depending on where you get it.

The sausage at any of the 3 is ok, not great,  and I know for Kreuz and Smitty's it kinda depends on the day. They haven't been real consistent in my opinion. We usually get jalapeno cheddar when we stop in. I wouldn't mail order any personally. I don't think they are that great.

I like southside sausage best. They sell it in the grocery stores down here. They are in Elgin, not Lockhart (same general area of the state). I wouldn't order anything from any of the Lockhart places myself. They were cool 10-15 years ago but that ship has sailed.

This is the same stuff they sell at HEB down here. I'm a Jalapeno/Cheddar guy too.

I agree on not shipping from Lockhart as well.  Central Texas is really spoiled in Austin and the surrounding areas how many quality BBQ places there are within an hour any direction of Austin.

If you are getting sausage shipped, I agree on southside market, or city market in luling is known for their beef sausage:

I have found the HEB brand to have as good and better as any you list. Have had all and agree the Southside (per @Cen-Tex). If you really want Southside HEB has them.
    I buy the HEB.

Where are you located? Most major cities have at least one very good meat market that normally has some killer sasuage

My vote is Smitty's for sausage. Blacks for brisket. Kruez for sides.

love the HEB sausage.  I had no idea they have so many, my local store doesn't have half of those.  I'm going to have to request they stock more, I'd love to try lots of those.

This is the downside to HEB.  They very a ton from store to store, not just on inventory, but pricing.  Even stores in the same town a few miles from each other.  I know they have to vary to different volume stores and demographics. I  am a very loyal HEB shopper, but it gets annoying.  My HEB rarely has the best meat specials like $.99/lbs pork butts or under $2/lbs choice briskets, even when HEB are advertising them.

This was kind of the point I was getting at earlier on the thread.  Good sausage is not hard to find, I would not pay extra to have it shipped in from a well-known BBQ place.
