Greetings friends,
Doesn't seem fair.. The end of my LooftLighter definitely took the brunt of this cook. Melted the end right off..
I'll post pics later.
I never read directions; am I not supposed to stick it in the charcoal and rip it until they glow?

Demo on YouTube says to touch the charcoal...after a few seconds when you get the first hot spot back it off an inch or so.....oops

The tip of my looftlighter has been mangled for a while. Still works, though.

My looftlighter melted too. It died last month, & I replaced it with a MAPP torch.

See: http://www.looftlighter.com/warranty/
- "The advantage of aluminum is that it does not absorb heat to dangerous levels, and also cools quickly. But the disadvantage of aluminum is that it can melt if the Looftlighter is kept touching the charcoal/wood, and this is why it’s so important to slightly pull it away when sparks or glow appear.
- So, if you haven’t followed the above instructions, and kept the tip of the Looftlighter touching the charcoal or wood for too long (so the aluminum got damaged), we’re sorry to say that the warranty does not cover this."

I did that too when I first got mine. Still worked but died after about 18 months. Shows how hot they get timely aluminum!LBGE & SBGE. Central Texas.

Poor design. They should at least make interchangeable tips or something.Large BGE and Medium BGE

... or just use a chimney (BGE- maybe you should make one like the Weber chimney). I spent $14 6 years ago and that is the sum total on what I have spent starting my Egg - well, there is the occasional need to get it going really fast at which point my leaf blower or re-purposed old hair dryer gets called into service.
-
I've had my Looftlighter for 3 years now, no problems, and hasn't melted yet.
-
Am i the only one still using newspaper and a chimney?

Second both @onedbguru and @milesvdustin ... I've used a chimney now for over 10 years... Tried Propane, Mapp and WeedBurner and it's just more hardware that has to be hauled out. My chimney sits next to my eggs ready at a moments notice!

I burned up my first, second and third looftlighters the same way. As has been said about me a la Mike Judge, "that boy ain't right in the head...."
-
I use my looftlighter (or hairdryer) after starting instant sparks with this toy, so it seldom touches the lump...
