I'm looking for gloves to take out the plate setter when hot, cast iron pans, grates etc. Any recommendations? I almost bought a pair of welding gloves but there was no temp rating or specs on the packaging. Checked out my local egg store and they more or less just have single mitts - not what I'm looking for.

Get these, with high cuff.

Welding gloves are a must for handling a piping hot plate setter, but too bulky for items like a cast iron pan or even cooking grate.
In fact, since I got a Woo, I can't remember the last time used my welding gloves.
What I use are the cloth gardening gloves at Home Depot, very cost effective and will protect your hand for items that are just medium hot.

My preference are these from Amazon. Flexible enough to hold tongs and flip steaks or spatual to flip burgers but strong enough to take out hot platesetter as long as you know exactly where you are going to set it down. Main thing is super long cuffs--no more singed arm hair on large burps--I never open hot egg without these on--and very good price for the quality: http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Raichlen-Best-Barbecue-Gloves/dp/B0007ZGURU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462567614&sr=8-1&keywords=steve+gloves

SmokinTiger81,
I was a day or two away from ordering those exact gloves when another poster here told me to save my money because they were complete crap. He complained that he bought a pair and that they didn't protect enough against the heat. But now I see your post and am again reconsidering them. Is it fair to say that you are happy with yours and that they do a good job against the heat? I don't do very many high heat cooks. I just need something to wear when removing a hot cast iron skillet or when removing the plate setter so that I can add more lump, wood, etc.

Hub. I keep a couple foil lined bricks around to set hot stuff on. You have to move fast but they work for me. Hottest thing is getting stone off spider. Real benefits are arm protection when opening egg and flipping burgers etc. good heat protection but flexible. At the price worth a try. These are all I use. And if really hot I do slip gloves off after releasing stone as some heat comes through

I have these and love them. I'll grab the hot platesetter without even thinking twice. http://www.metalclaysupply.com/Zetex-Plus-High-Heat-Resistant-Gloves-p/59995.htm~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I find the rating on most gloves to be unclear. I saw that superglove has some gloves rated at a 5 which meant youd feel the heat at 4 seconds and be burned by 14 seconds. I suspect this type of timeframe is common and would like to know how it applies to the gloves posted in this thread.Edmonton, Alberta - XL & Minimax

I do a bit of welding. Last pair of gloves I bought I tried lifting the plate setter, the dome was at 450* for 45 minutes. Ain't no way I would suggest doing that.

If you are looking for just high heat protection, then go with the other recommendations here--not mine. My recommendation is not the best heat glove, it is just the best all around glove I like best. If something was hotter than normal, I can always slip on my pair of those white oven gloves inside of the leather ones if I need to. I just like the flexible long leather ones due to forearm protection when opening egg and when working in hot egg--flipping burgers or steaks in a 500 to 600 degree egg, wokking, adding glaze to something, etc. And they are flexible enough to hold tongs, basting brush, spatulas, etc. You have the full range of solutions now, just buy based on your priorities.

RRP. That is the problem. High heat ones too stiff and flexible ones not super heat resistance. I spend way more time cooking than moving hot stuff so flexible gloves best for me. And I just move hot stuff fast
