MAPP Torch Suggestion

Can someone give me some tips on what to look for in a MAPP Torch?[p]I picked one up a couple months back. Thinking I didn't want to waste money on some fancy trigger-ignition torch when I could just use a trusty lighter, I picked up one of the basic models which, basically, is a stem with a valve on it that screws onto the propane bottle.[p]Anyway... I can't keep the stupid thing lit. Every time I point the tip down towards the lump... my torch flame goes out. The tip of the torch is "adjustable" meaning I can screw in or out the tip... but nothing seems to help keep the torch lit when I'm tipping it town into the Egg to light the lump.[p]I'm thinking I should pick up a new, different, model. Any suggestions y'all have would be much appreciated![p]Thanks!

I bought the kind with the 3 or 4 foot hose and a wire kind of belt clip. I think it was about $30 or a bit more. I went with that one because I wasn't sure if they work inverted. Someone else can weigh in im sure and there are lots of MAPP users here.

SirKeats, I got mine at Home Depot and it came with a hose that goes between the part that screws on the bottle and the tube for the flame. It also has a little hook so you can hang the bottle from your belt while your using the torch. I don't use the hook part, but the hose allows me to keep the bottle upright.

I have the same cheep on you have and mine works..I have used it for a long time. Just make sure you don't have the gas turned up to high or it will blow itslef out..

Grillicious,[p]Are you talking about one of those giant weed-burners?

SirKeats,[p]Check out this link.[p]http://bernzomatic.com/bernzomatic/consumer/jhtml/category.jhtml?catId=BernzoCat100010[p]I have the TS4000T and like it. Check the hose on this page
as it will fit the MAPP and Propane tanks.[p]

SirKeats,
i use the bernzomatic jth7,it uses mapp or propane bottles.
it has a nice hose, and the belt clip, which i mounted to my table keeps it at the ready.i like this setup more than the guru golf club.just my 2 cents.

SirKeats,
Well fellow Egger, you get what you pay for. Go out and get the fancy push botton torch. Not map gass. Get the propane torch. Here is the site that will give you an idea. I have had mine for couple of years and NEVER had a problem. [p]http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=91037[p]Chef Jerry

SirKeats,
I love my MAPP Torch.Seems like you are getting the flame to close to the lump. That will put a damper to the flame.

I bought a fancy trigger head, a bottle of gas, and a lighter from Lowes for $65
Then went to home depot and saw this kit for $30[p]Went right back to Lowes return line.

hayhonker,[p]Nice!!! All we have is a lowes up here... but maybe I can find some other store that would carry something like that. That'd be perfect!
-
K_sqrd,[p]Thanks! Ya... it sounds like my problem is the tipping upsidedown of the bottle. Hopefully I can find me one of the hose torches.

SirKeats,
Propane is not the same as MAPP.
Propane will flood the tip, MAPP wont. Best to get the MAPP torch with the trigger. I have one and I dont use a hose.

SirKeats,
Actually,
I've had no problem with turning the bottle upside down with
a MAPP torch and the head that I have. I bought it at
ACE hardware on sale for about $25 with a bottle of propane.
The ACE guy thought I was nuts when I told him I wanted to
use it to start charcoal for a BBQ. The head I bought works
for both propane and MAPP gas. I have no experience with the
hose but it looks like it should work great.
