Changing the seal / gasket...

Comment and Question:

I have had to change the gaskets on my egg twice recently. Last time I noticed there was still residue sticking from the previous seal. But I just stuck the new one over it. Must have been a mistake because now the new one is coming off. So, should I clean the old residue off before putting on a new seal. What should I use to get it to come unstuck? Is there a cleaning solution that works?

I would clean 100% and sand the area down with fine grit. You could also get some high heat spray adhesive to help it stick. Others will have more experience than I. @RRP can hook you up with a popular aftermarket gasket.

Got my XL replacement gasket from Amazon ($15). Use putty knife or 5-in-one tool and scrape off old gasket after soaking often with acetone. A cinch. YouTube videos galore out there.

You you didn't make a mistake. The stock gasket is a POS and you will be replacing it again and again until you finally break. So contact rrp and be done with it.

No matter what gasket you use you definetly need to scrape off the old residue. You can use a 3m paint scraper you attach to your drill or you can use some chemicals. I just use the paint scraper. Worked perfectly.

Follow what @4Runner said with the scraper. I'm not the norm in the gasket crowd as I'm still using the Nomex from BGE. My large gasket is 6 yrs old, small is 3 and the mini about 7months. I think the trick to these gaskets is first have a good seal between dome & base, 2nd - don't let any of the gasket hang to the inside of the ceramics where it can get charred from the fire and 3rd make sure the ceramic lips are good and clean before you apply the gasket.
