Broken dome thermo (AGAIN!!!)

Options
Hello all,
I went out this morning to get my Egg fired up (smoking a small ham and a turkey breast) and noticed my dome thermo was way out of wack. We had some pretty cold weather in the last week so I thought it might need a calibration. When I removed the thermo from the dome I noticed the stem was bent and the thermo is no longer functional. CRAP!

Has anyone replaced their dome thermo with an aftermarket version that's a little more reliable or easier to read? If so please shoot me a link, looks like I'm in the market.

Cheers all and happy thanksgiving!

3" dial. I've read others were happy with them

Either the new black faced one:

    Or the old red/white/blue one:

I own both ... like the black face better for visibility.

Add a wine cork to the stem, on the outside of the egg, to shorten the stem and alleviate some interference with the protein.  Also, don't install the clip on the stem ... it's not necessary.

I put the clip on the stem on the outside of the egg.  Same as the cork method but this way I don't lose the dam clip.

Can't tell you how many of those clips I have thrown in the trash! Why are you afraid of losing it? Gravity keeps the thermometer in place and the clip just hinders removing it for calibration or not sticking it in the meat/bending it.

The stem is rather long and hits the protein. I use the clips form time to time, one being when deep frying to hold the thermo in the oil.

One forum member uses them as spacers for the drip pan.  Kiln posts work better though. CGS has various sizes in stock ... just not posted on their website yet.

The clip makes a great spacer for the drip pan.

@Cindysue put the stem in boiling water, should read 100* C. Adjust using the 5/8" nut on back.

I've never broke one. How do you break one and not know it? I've even spun mine when it was new and didn't realize how fast the temp climbs when vents wide open but it still works...

When I say 'broke' I mean 'bent the stem' in both instances. I actually believe this is a result of trying to take it out of the clip impatiently in both occurrences. From here on out I'm following @RRP s good advice and ditching the clip. I snagged a cork from dinner last night and will sub that when my new thermo arrives.

That clip makes a good spacer for the drip pan. Other than that, I have no use for it.
