Maple Chopping Block
So I normally post a question first and then buy.
There is some knowledge on this forum...
But here goes. Been looking for a nice chopping block for several months. Really wanted a nice selection of wood tones and also wanted end grain if I could justify the price. After many pages of reviews on many brands I bought this board from Amazon. Made by Michigan Maple Block. Less than $100 shipped to my door. It is a beautiful board and very well made. I did light sand with some 600 grit paper to finish it off a little. At 20"x15"x3 1/2" it's not a light weight board but with a little care it will outlast me and the next user. Had my mind set on a Boos but some of the recent reviews are less than stellar on anything but their top end boards.
All the reviews and tips said to buy a nice thick board if you can afford it. It will pay in the long run.
As with anything, time will tell but at this point I'm very happy with this board.
Thanks for looking.

I almost asked you about that board when I saw the second picture in a separate thread. I'm in the market for my Christmas present and a quality, end grain board that looks good enough to leave out is on my short list. Glad you posted!

I have a plunge router but not sure I have the guts to try it. Ha...Ha
I really like the the 3 1/2" tall board. Amazing how the little extra height makes chopping more relaxed.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Shouldn't be hard to find a shop to route some grooves. My dad has the equipment, but he's not so steady anymore and I don't think I'd have the guts. Maybe with his guidance.

A great deal. I have eyed one of their edge grain 24x18s at the mall, to retire my bamboo 24x18 for the camper, slicing pizzas, quesadillas, eggfests, etc. It too, is a nice price at $69.99.

Someone made a chop box with one.
Could predrill and mount some handles too? But I don't know if this type of butcher block end grain design (3") was made to be moved much or flipped?BrandonQuad Cities

Looks nice! Mine is about that size, but only 2" thick. Then again, I think it was only $50 or less at Home Goods. Just keep it dry (and oiled) and it should last a long time. I keep mine raised off the counter top so any water that splashes under it won't matter (it's right next to the sink). So far so good.
I have the finger slots. I wouldn't lose sleep over not having them. Especially if you raise the block above the counter. Easy to get your fingers under it.
Enjoy!I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

keep that beauty oiled with food grade mineral oil. especially when the weather is super dry. I have John boos cherry end grain board, they are beautiful but gotta keep them oiled. Once a month would suffice.

I already have a bottle of the Boos oil and my tube of the above Boos cream should be delivered today.
I bet your cherry wood board is a beauty...I really wanted cherry but my kitchen is a little dark so I went with the lighter, cheaper maple.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Not sure if you guys are already aware of this, but cleaning/sanitizing your boards with kosher salt, lemon, and coconut oil is a great way. Plus, the coconut oil helps moisturize the board and does go rancid either.
Just an FYI, they say coconut oil can be used as a personal "lube", so it should be good for your board.------------------------------

First off congrats on the purchase...I searched for several months for a cutting board and settled on a Larchwood...
@HeavyG I purchased a custom 18 X 24 and 2 inches thick board from Larchwood several years ago. I love it and always get compliments from guests when I break it out. Highly recommend them. Others that I like are:

End grain is supposed to be self healing....LOL...For real I would have the same concern about marking up the counter top...How much beeswax do you go through in a year in treating that counter top?

I just got it. I use mineral oil. For now I have mixed feelings. I am in love with the looks and feel it but it requires a lot of attention. Namely wine stains and the like. It also affects magazines and newspaper with oil stains, but I hope that is temporary as it was recently saturated with oil. Wiping it requires a few passes as it dries out the rag lol. But the looks, oh man, it a thing of beauty.Quebec - Canada

That end grain maple top is a thing of beauty. Somehow the range doesn't look like it belongs....

@Photo Egg ... I've got a Michigan Maple Block 30x30x16 inch single dovetail chopping block like their Monarch model. Bought it 1974 from a small grocery store in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that was going out of business. Not sure anymore how old it was when we bought it ... but, it wasn't new at that time. It's been in seven houses, in three states, and on two different continents. The dovetail joints are still tight and it only has one small crack in a straight seam (only opens up in the winter) after all these years.
They may not have the Boos/Yeti reputation, but they make a fine product. Based on what I've experienced, you have a great cutting board. Enjoy.
Instead of a couple of dainty finger grooves, you could route a channel all the way around the bottom edge. Here's what the back/bottom side looks like on my 2-1/4" thick cutting board.
Seems dumb to give up that much surface on the backside, but I've come to really appreciate the all-around finger access. Boards this size are heavy.
