Can I cook with indirect heat in a Small BGE? (Deltona, FL)
Options
I am new to the BGE, I purchased a small model and have had it about 2 weeks. So far I have had the best burgers and steaks of my life on it. [p]I have been looking for a plate setter and a pizza stone but can not find them for the small model, do they exist? Is there a good website to purchase Eggcessories for the small model? All the websites I have foundmostly cater to the medium and up and so do the local dealers (mostly pool supply stores) that I have been to.[p]If anyone local knows a great shop let me know or a great website. I really want to cook up some ribs or salmon with indirect heat

AlenH,
Probably the best solution for the Small Egg are Gratemates. If you visit my website, you will find ads for the Gratemates which pop up every so often. Or, I can just give you the link, LOL! With Gratemates, you can use the BGE ceramic pizza dish or a pie pan as a barrier. Also the GrateMates can be used to raise the grid. Also, you can use the 12" BGE pizza stone in the small Egg for most things. I use mine all the time.[p]TNW

AlenH,
I don't think there is a plate setter for the small, I use these. -RP

AlenH, I just bought my small at Waldorf, and purchased my Gratemates right along with it. I cooked my first beer can chicken on it just the other day, and it was great. Just make sure you also purchace the ceramic pie dish that BGE sells, and set it inside. It works as a barrier. My chicken was ever better than when I use my large. Have fun!!

Saucy Sue,
Where did you get your ceramic dish, I was told it was discontinued and unavailable. -RP

Awesome!! Thanks for the fast responses!!!! This is exactly what I have been looking for. I will put in an order

The Naked Whiz,
Just FYI, My Grate Mate is a permanent fixture in my Small. I always use the raised grid, and I use the BGE ceramic dish with a disposable piepan liner as a drip pan when I need to indirect. Works like a charm.

AZRP, I bought it from a dealer in Cincinnati. They usually don't know whats going on. When I told him I just bought a small in Waldorf, he said he thought they discontinued it. He had a few of them.. not in the best shape, but he gave me a little discount. I figured it doesn't matter what it looks like, a disposable pie pan will be in it anyway. sue

AlenH,
While the "GrateMates" are a wonderful thing, you can see some alternatives on my website in the "tips" section..also some "in use" pictures in the cooks section. [p]Wess

AlenH, I can't tell without the picture, but it sounds like it. It is ceramic and green on the outside and I guess it's 8 inches, but I am a woman, and who knows what 8 inches looks like anyway!!

WessB,
Wow, thanks for the tips. Looks like I may be able to get the same effect cheaper this way.

AlenH,
Yes you can, but the Gratemates are a more universal device, If you start off cheap to get the hang of lo and slo...I bet you end up with the gratemates in the long run...there are many different uses for the gratemates....either way you can get the same results.[p]Wess
