Pit Mitts / BBQ Gloves to remove ceramic plate setter, grids, and food SUGGESTIONS?

I use what tarheelmat uses and I have took the plate setter out while smoking around 275 and didn't feel a thing!

Welding gloves

I'll pull the CI pan shown in the picture off at 400+.. now, I make sure I have a place for it. 

I always end up getting grease in the gloves fabric eventually and then they are worthless for heat protection.

Thank you Matthew.  You should check into a chuan for wokking.  I've not had to use gloves since I got one.     

I just sent the link to the purchase manager.  

I just got a cheap one from Amazon. Getting ready to get a good one now that I know I'll use it.  

-Welding gloves
-Know where you're going to put the plate setter - make it unobstructed and close
-Move quickly

I'm willing to bet the gloves @tarheelmatt posted have a high percentage of cotton with some kind of fire retardant. 

I know many of you have heard my spiel on leather, but here it is again.

I learned a long time ago working in a blacksmith shop that heat and leather don't mix. Welding gloves work great for shielding slag but not so great holding/handling hot things. We always used cotton gloves. Leather gloves were a big no no.  Only our welder and grinders used leather gloves. I will say we burned up some gloves, but not our hands. By the time you realize the heat transfer with leather gloves, your burnt. Try using some cheap potholders or oven mitts. 

Welding Gloves are for welding. 

Yesterday I carried a hot CI pan from egg to house without problems using my cheap pot holders. Could not have been done with welding gloves.

When I lived in a small Iowa town some years back, I was on the volunteer fire department. We always carried two pair of the brown cotton work gloves and one pair of very large leather gloves in our turn out gear. You put on the cotton gloves first and then the leather over top. As long as the cotton gloves did not get wet you were good to go on handling very hot items. The second pair of cotton gloves was to change into if the first got wet. When the inner gloves were wet you could get steam burns when dealing with very hot items. 

Brother worked in an aluminum recycling plant, hooked me up with four pairs of Kevlar foundry gloves.  Two reg, two gauntlet.  Buddy is a welder, gives me free SJ Smith welding gloves whenever I need them.  Also bought the BGE Pitt Mitt style gloves.  Use them all for different tasks.  Dexterity is not needed for the really hot ones.  Brother also gave me a few pair of gauntlet leather gloves for loading lump or cleaning out charcoal. 


Personally, I would not grab a hot platesetter with welder's gloves or Pitt Mitts, and I have the thicker ones.  

I can pick up a smokin' hot platesetter with no worries, or a CI skillet thats been in a 550 degree oven or 600 plus degree egg for over an hour, hold it in my hand to season, then place it back into the oven/egg.....don't even feel it.
