Fire box repair

While cleaning out my small egg I noticed that the firebox had broken into two pieces. I used Eggor's suggested fix and wired them back together. I used a 1/8" masonry drill bit and the ground wire from some romex house wire I had laying around.[p]The two pictures below show the result. I used 3 wires but two wires would probably have been sufficient.[p]Toy Man[p][p]

Toy Man,
I'm no expert, but isn't copper wire bad. I believe the fumes are toxic. Maybe someone else will let you know. I could be wrong.

I'm no expert for sure but that reminds me of a MSDS sheet on some hand soap we had at work. In the handling instruction section it said "Caution, wear rubber gloves". -RP

AZRP,[p]I suspect copper can form unhealthy compounds when coming into contact with acids or other food components. They make cookware out of copper primarily for its properties in conducting heat and secondarily for appearance. Look carefully and you see that no manufacturer has the copper where food contacts it. Revereware used it on the bottom outside. AllClad uses it either on the outside or sandwiched between layers of stainless. I don't know that fumes from heated wire would cause problems but I am pretty certain you don't want your food to touch the metal itself.

I'm in the fire/life safety business and an electrical engineer... and I think you are correct. Copper wire has an enamel coating that helps to keep it from turning green and I think it may actually affect the conduction. When it burns it is hazardous in large amounts. Copper pots do not have the coating and are quite safe. In fact, I'm in the market for a set of nice heavy sold copper pots and pans, But they cost a fortune...
