Obviously I know this thing isn't going to be the quality of a Thermapen, but I found this on Amazon and it seems to have good reviews. Just wondering if anyone on here had ever seen/used one of these http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Thermometer-Collapsible-Replacement-Guarantee/dp/B00TKWWUCU/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1438285826&sr=1-1&keywords=palermo+thermometer
This strikes me as one of those things that if it seems too good to be true...but it does have almost all positive reviews. I didn't see anything in past posts with "Palermo", and couldn't find anything about it on the AmazingRibs therm reviews either.
Was also looking at Lavatools Thermowand which had some pretty decent reviews, but was just curious about the one in the link above since it's such a bargain price.

Order the Therompen... There's a reason this ones only $18Charlotte, NC - Large BGE 2014, Maverick ET 733, Thermopen, Nest, Platesetter, Woo2 and Extender w/Grid, Kick Ash Basket, Pizza Stone, SS Smokeware Cap, Blackstone 36"

The thermopop is popular too. It's slower than the thermapen, but it's only about 30 bucks.
-
Blue Thermapen is on sale right now. Lots buy the Thermapop as a cheaper alternative.

I've been leaning toward a Thermapop for sure, but then came across this one today. Pretty sure I'm still going Thermapop route. I'd like a pen, but I'll have to hold off and ask for it for Christmas.--Because I'm like ice, buddy. When I don't like you, you've got problems.

My wife bought me one about a month ago. I have tested it in boiling water and put it up against my Maverick. Works very good, readings are right on, and it is fast and sensitive. It's overall feel is cheap and light, but for $20 you can't go wrong in my opinion.Lake Keowee, SC

I read a review of instant reads and this one won the value category. Only marginally slower than the thermapen.

I'd just go with the thermopop, to me 2-3 seconds of speed isn't worth the $80 difference in price between it and the backlight thermopen (since the backlighting is crucial to me).

OK, I just ordered this one. I only have one thermapen, we'll see how this pans out. Got the yellow because it's faster.

I put off buying the Thermapen because of the price. Broke down a few months ago and plopped down $99 and got one. Best. Meat. Thermometer. Ever. Now I regret waiting. Oh, as always, GO TIGERS!!Laurens,SC

My Thermapens are older models so maybe they have slowed down a bit with age but there is no significant difference between them and the Lavatools.
The Lavatools probes are a bit shorter but that does not bother me.
The Lavatools have a magnet in them and I keep one stuck under the top of my stainless prep table so I always have ready access to a thermometer.
I have no idea if the Lavatools will last as long as the Thermapen so I'll just have to wait and see.
Thermowerks makes some nice stuff but they are not bulletproof as one can see from some of the negative comments on Amazon.
Thermoworks has kept their premium prices going for many years mainly because there really wasn't much serious competition in the instant read probe category. That has changed and I don't think the Thermapen is really worth the premium they still try to charge.
They seem to be offering almost weekly discounts on Thermapens these days so maybe they are starting to feel a bit of pressure in the marketplace.
I've got a ThermoPop also and don't really like it and don't use it and it pretty much stays in one of my kitchen gadget/junk drawers.
I look forward to your comments regarding the LavaTools, especially if you have a more recent model Thermapen to compare it to.

Imagine buying a 'BGE' alternative? ... Not me, buy cheap buy twice. No Akorn for me or Vision or whatever. I went BGE. I went Thermapen.I've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca.

The quick, accurate reading of the Thermapen is great. I can stick in the center an have an accurate reading. As I pull it out I can get the reading as well without waiting seconds.

Do you know if either of these are backlit? I checked the Amazon listing for each, but this wasn't mentioned.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

Quick question, when your using these thermometers, are you measuring at random intervals or at a set end time?

I have a RED ThermoPop and it is fine for what I do. Gives me a reading in about 5 seconds, is back lit and the orientation of the readout can be changed to about what ever you want. The Blue is a good deal right now, but there are other things I need more. If spent $20 or more on cheap probes and regret it.XL, WSM, Coleman Road Trip Gas GrillKansas City, Mo.
