    i have used several bags of rockwood based on the reviews from this board....I really dig it, but with that said, I dont think that the BGE lump is worthy of the negative rap it receives either.....I like it as well.

    I'm not the lump specialist, but I just did a fourteen hour low and slow with half Royal Oak and half coconut lump. Still had some left when I added more to bring  up to 300 for the baked beans. The pulled pork we did was fan-frickin'-tastic!

They packed all of them into one big box and I was concerned that FedEx Ground would keep dropping the box and breaking the lump. Bottom line - you have no control of what happens in transit unless you order a pallet full.

    Can you imagine how the individual bags are thrown around at a BGE dealer? Probably have better luck if you find a full pallet of RO on the floor at Home Depot as the bags haven't been individually handled much if at all.

    @Crimsontidegirl - If you go to an ace hardware, look for a boxed lump, 20 lbs, of a brand called Forrest Lumps.  Its imported from the Balkans in eastern Europe.  I've found it to be a great lump, on par with Rockwood; but Rockwood will still be my goto lump for when I cook for people other than my family!

    I use BGE lump and I'm very happy with it. When I do a long burn I mix any of the old lump with the new, the old lump ignites quicker and burns a little faster.

    I'm really happy with BGE charcoal, which I gather is Royal Oak, but I've heard so many raves about Rockwood I'd be happy to try it.  But no, I've never seen it in my area, Ace or elsewhere.  I don't think it's available here.

    Agree with @bwarner. There's small pieces and dust in the bottom of any bag of lump. 
    I am working through my first bad as well   I kind of like the stuff.

    My last bag of RO was mainly full of broken pieces and lots of tiny chips and bits.  In fact, there was quite a bit of just plain dust in the bag, so I was a little disappointed.  But overall I like the way it burns, and unlike Cowboy there's very little in the way of debris/rocks/clay chunks in there.

    I want to do a big buy but the math prohibits me from arranging one.  Even with the occasional busted up chunks, $13 for 18# of RO is pretty good.  Rockwood is $22 for 20#...

    I'm open to ideas though.  I'll do a bulk buy in Cleve/Akron area if there's any interest and the price is on.

    It's ironic no doubt, but on the thermo it's a lot easier to read.

    @theyolksonyou That is a good suggestion about the spatula. I usually stick the stem through a paper plate. I think your method sounds better. I will have to give it a try.
