Cowboy lumps are for chumps. That's pretty much a given:
And here is a big...very big...reason why:
I can almost forgive a pebble or 2, but a meteor-size chunk of rock weighing in at almost 3/4 of pound, give me a break:
Here's our XL next to it to say nothing of how it compares to a rack or ribs:
You get what you pay for, I get that. But this seems like more than borderline consumer fraud. I guess I should be thankful it didn't crack the ceramic when it tumbled out of the bag.

Got the finish formula off a YouTube video. Two build-up coats of epoxy and 5 coats of varnish containing real good UV inhibitors.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

I pour it right out of the bagColumbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.

Have you done the math, what does an 11.2 ounce chunk of rock cost?
I figure it's worth fifty cents based on $14 for a 20 lb bag.

BBQ is a celebration of culture in America. It is the closest thing we have to the wines and cheeses of Europe.
Drive a few hundred miles in any direction, and the experience changes dramatically.

I will come take that annoying rock off your hands, my fee would be your table.

I adhere to a very strict, exacting procedure when I put lump in my egg.
1. Grasp bag.
2. Invert bag over open egg.
3: Ignite what tumbles out of the bag.
If you precisely follow this procedure, you will get fire and all will be well.Flint, Michigan -

I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

I've obviously buried the lead. My son and I just completed the finish. I will post next how the process went and the many, many lessons learned.Beef...It's what's for dinner tonight.

Again, very nice table. Did you saturate all sides with epoxy? Reason I ask, the design of that middle shelf is intolerant of cross grain expansion and contraction with moisture. Unless it's plywood, then you're fine. Also, the top will have the same issue, but as long as you have it attached with fasteners that allow it to move you'll be fine (or if you completely saturated the outside with epoxy).

Never take Cowboy lump for granite.
_____________Remember when teachers used to say 'You won't have a calculator everywhere you go'? Well, we showed them.

nolaegghead: Oh, yeah. 2 coats of epoxy inside and out, before the varnish. You are right. You must have a complete seal to limit wide shifts in expansion and contraction, or you're dead meat. Something else I did underneath. I fashioned what I call anti-shift plates and epoxyed them between coats, then re-coated everything again with epoxy. I also used roughly 25 screws per plate for a very tight glue-up. So I'm confident the lamination will be very stable against shifting. Only time will tell.

I think you'll be fine. I epoxied my top on all sides and spar paint on everything, everywhere. Three years later and my table still looks like new and it gets hit with water and some sun.
Here's mine three years ago. I'll shoot a picture of it three years later for comparison.

There are a few small cracks around the hole in the top that resulted from the high prolonged heat of pizza cooks.
