Headed offshore this weekend. The forcast was too good to pass up. Alarm went off at 1:20 am, ran 63 miles, and lines in at 5:30 (running at 14-22 kts in the dark stinks).  For the next 9.5 hours, we had a great day, with the longest time being 1:15 without action.

We went:
4/7 for yellowfin tuna
2/2 for dolphin fish (aka mahi mahi)
1/1 for white marlin (released)
0/1 for blue marlin  - I had the best part of the fight- saw the hit, held the rod for the initial run, airborn jump and tailwalk.  After 10 minutes and turning it twice, it came unbuttoned.
1/1 mystery swing and miss

Since it is all about the kids when fishing, they get the pictures with the fish....
Headed back to the barn at 3:00, cleaned the fish and boat, then ate. Sorry no pictures of the fish on the egg.

Wow!  Looks like a great time was had by all except Charlie.  With that sky and the blue water, I never would've guessed that was Jersey.

Depending on current, once you get out 6-8 miles, the water is usually clear, but green. Once you get to 30 miles you have a chance at the cobalt blue color, but sometimes you have to go as far as 90 to get the blue.  It all depends on eddies off the Gulf Stream and where they end up.  3 years ago, an eddy came in as far as the cape may reef (10'ish mi out), and you could catch mahi there.

Great post. I'm drooling right now over those tuna pics. Love that tuna sashimi!
Nothing beats fresh caught tuna and mahi.
    Congrats on the marlin release.

I mix it up.  Some as sushi/sashimi, some cooked.
I also take the "scraps" and put in a pan to cook. Then I mix the mayo, celery, onions etc, and mix all that up, then fold in the tuna "scraps" to make tuna fish sandwichs.
This is my lunch right now:

Thanks. In the late summer and early fall when we do overnighters, we also catch fresh ummmm.... Calamari, except, they are squid first. A quick cleaning and roll of the pizza cutter back and forth,  and in the pan with garlic, pepper and a bit of oil is fantastic.  Caught to being eaten in 20 mins.
