Do any of you grill with or without the firing and just set the grate on the firebox?

    I've only remove the ring if I needed more headroom and that was just on the small.  

    I will adjust the height of where I fill the lump too depending on what I'm cooking. If I'm going to sear I fill it up pretty full.
