Some on here and especially on the Facebook group page (that I dropped from) think the Egg is the almighty tool for everything. Guy on the Facebook page, before I dropped, posted something about the Blackstone Pizza cooker. He was poking fun about it saying he could produce that and better with his Egg. I called BS on that post and stated other items.
The cooker I have cooked on for many years makes just as good Q has the Egg, however it just isn't as efficient. You have to shovel coals for 12-14 hours ever 15-30 min at a time.
Some are just blinded by all the hype and the price sometimes. Egg's are great, don't get me wrong, but it isn't "the one for everything" like some portray.------------------------------

I ran out of kool-aid a long time ago so I realize what limitations the egg has. As a smoker, the egg will never compete with a stick burner. Better smoke and an offset with a true indirect heat source will produce better brisket, ribs and pork. The downside is its a lot more work than the egg will ever be. For pizza, the egg is great, but a WFO or Blackstone will produce better and more consistent results. If you want to wok, a BTU burner is quicker and cheaper to use. Use that same BTU burner and cook your steaks on a cast iron pan.
I'm an egghead through and through but I'm a cook first and I will always look for the best tool to complete the job.
I'm looking for better smoke flavor and more volume...both of which the egg can't provide.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ.... -

You could always get the backwoods gator model it has a removable water pan so you can drop to the lowest grate level and grill on it as well. I wouldn't want to sear steaks on it but I'm sure you could run 400 easily at the grate level for some burgers. It has space also believe it can do 16 racks of ribs or 8 briskets something like that.

I think for a lot of people, some of the frustration with the Egg comes down to consistency. You can definitely hit a home run from time to time on brisket or pizza, but it's hard to get the consistency you'll achieve on other systems that are specifically designed for the job.
All that being said, I don't think I'll ever invest in something like what @cazzy's getting here. But I'm definitely interested in a Blackstone and maybe a WFO down the road."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike -

Cazzys decision to purchase a Vault is a good thing in my opinion. As much as I love my eggs, they do not come without limitations. While they are about as close to "all around" cookers as it gets, capacity is their weakness. No matter what voodoo you try, or how hard you improvise, a big vertical cabinet easily wins in this arena. It's no contest. If cazzys goal is to cook large loads in one run, then he has made a excellent decision. The big unit is at least as efficient as the egg, has the capacity of a medium size stick burner, and turns out darn near stick burner quality smoked meat if you do your part. I agree with others when they say that they will always have a egg. I will always have a egg or two in my arsenal as well. But if you look close, you will always see a big unit looming in the background as well. It boils down to capacity, plain and simple. If you cook small cuts and for a few people, then the egg is more than you will ever need. However if your forte is catering, large events or food service, the big vertical is more than a tough act to follow. All cookers have their place in the cooking arena. Each fills a specific spot. The big verticals are for the person who needs capacity and set it and forget convienance. Look around any pro competition, they were one time dominated by offsets. The big verticals have now surpassed them and for good reason. Enjoy the big vertical cazzy. God knows I do.
