So, I like nice grill marks on steak. Grabbed one of the cast iron grates off my Weber gas grill and put it on top of my regular grate. Worked fine and will suffice as I am too cheap to buy a cast iron grate for the egg. When finished, I just put it back on the gasser where it will wait until the next time I cook steak.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. There are very few purchases I regret Egg wise but if I had a cast iron grate that would have fit on the regular grate I hope that I would have had the intelligence to do the same thing.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

The grate off the gasser is rectangular and smaller than the egg grate, but it worked fine to get those sear marks.

I refer to it as being esourceful. More protein for you.XL BGEJoe JRBaltimore, MD

Well, I guess I sorta used the Mangrates I already had sitting in my gas grill. Without realizing it, I saved $85. Although mine are not a "grill enhancement system," just some old grates off an old gasser.

@epcotisbest Judging by your post count you probably weren't around when "Mangrates" first came out. It was a running joke on the forum for a while. At least to me anyway...I raise my kids, cook and golf. No I missed that, just googled Mangrates and thought it was a bit silly and a lot pricey, at least for me.

Grill marks are overrated. When have you ever been to a really nice steak house and seen grill marks?
Once you go crust, you'll never return. Sear with a CI or SS pan on your egg or stove top. Nothing better man.
Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ.... -

Good move - and that’s not cheap, it is resourceful.

I use my gasser grate under a drip pan for airspace every time I use one. Woks like a charm.

I will try cooking on the cast iron pan sometime. Looking forward to trying new things on the egg.

I wasnt brave enough for any tricks or something I'd never done. I will try your cast iron crust on my next steak. Can you link a specific post for me to follow the directions?

I'm as cheap as they come. I like to say I'm frugal. I need to see if my Weber CI grate will fit on my large. Thanks for the idea.Lg & MM BGE, Humphrey’s Battle Box | Palatine, Illinois
