My BF is sick and his comfort food (which I wish would be chicken soup) is something he calls beef gravy on toast. :( When I was in the army, I think this was called sos...but I also think it was made with sausage. As someone who cooks for people because I love them, I'd love any suggestions you've got. TIA

It's one of my husbands favorite comfort meals and he wants it over a baked potato. We sauté ground beef and minced onion. Add flour and milk to make a cream gravey. Season with worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and better than beef bouillon for flavor.

@GrannyX4 Thanks for that. That is the direction I was going in, but thinking of adding sage. Is milk definitely better than half and half?XL, JR, and more accessories than anyone would ever need near Olympia, WA

Half and half is always better but at our age our cardiolygist would prefer the milk!Every day is a bonus day and every meal is a banquet in Winter Springs, Fl !

I love **** on a shingle! My wife wife makes beef gravy on toast andhers is very simple. Brown up a pound of 80/20 ground beef and then make a rue with the grease. Add salt and pepper to taste but the ground beef back in and apply to toast, enjoy. When I make it I like to use dried beef, hard boiled eggs, mushrooms, cheese and s/p.

We do 1lb ground beef seasoned with pepper and seasoning salt. After browned, melt in 1 TLBS butter and add in 1-1/2 TLBS flour. Stir in, and cook a few minutes. Stir in 1 cup milk and stir over medium heat till thick. Season to taste. We serve over biscuits or toast. I like it with peas and carrots so I can mix them in as well.
SOS to us has dried beef or chipped beef in it.No Name City, just between Scottsbluff and Mitchell, NE Crown! More Crown!

Made it with half sausage and half ground beef. He loved it, so thanks all! I wasn't impressed for dinner, but sure was yummy over toast with an egg this morning.XL, JR, and more accessories than anyone would ever need near Olympia, WA

I think a lot of times its not so much the exact taste or quality of the food as much as the memories it evokes.

This is the recipe I used, except I changed out the chicken bouillon for organic beef better than bouillon and used half sausage and half ground beef. He really liked it.

I haven't thought about hamburger gravy in years! When I was in public school 30 years ago, it was a regular on our lunch menu. Served over mashed potatoes and it was one of my favorites.
I know... I know... school lunch right?!?! Our school lunches were very good and much of it was made from scratch back then. Not the pre-packaged, low nutrient, over-processed stuff that gets served in school lunch programs today.
Thanks for bringing this back from the depths of my memory Sandy. I'm going to make this sometime soon.L x2, M, S, Mini and a Blackstone 36. She says I have enough now....eggAddict from MN! -

@henapple This is actually close to what I'd do, to bring part of the PNW to TX, if I had the facilities.
