my wife says everything is starting to taste the same. Does anybody else have this complaint? Any suggestions besides getting rid of her?

Different wood, temps, rubs, sauces and meats. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. I use big green egg charcoal and have changed in the rubs and salsas. I think she believes it's all tasting like smoke.

You sure you are waiting for the lump to burn clean before you are putting food on? Does she say things are smokey without you adding smoking wood? If the smoke from the egg smells good the food will taste good no for smells strong and nasty the food will taste that way.Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

i am not adding smoking wood and I am letting lump burn a long time before cooking. She still says it is smokey

Smoke is smoke, some say it all tastes the same. That's why we mix it up a bit. Use a neutral lump, watch or leave out the smoke wood. Do a T-Rex sear, less time means less smoke. Use your egg with a skillet inside and do some burgers or chicken. Baking steel? Sous Vide and then a sear?Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

How about switching to dishes with different flavor profiles? If you add wood for smoke, then try a different species of wood or go without smoking. The same is true if you don't usually add wood for smoking, then add some. With different seasonings and a different smoke strategy, your food should not taste the same ol' same ol'.Flint, Michigan

What kind of lump are you using? Some are stronger than othersColumbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

Been there, done that... What are you cooking? Do some off the rotation. Shrimp, pizza, wok, Dutch oven...

Change lump. Try cooking a lasagna and leave it covered with foil most of the cook then give it a kiss of smoke last 10 or 15 minutes.

My wife said that. I got a divorce. Never better!! Kidding. I used to use royal oak. Switched to Rockwood, no complaints. Www.firecraft.com.Cleveland, Ohio

BGE lump is too smokey for some people's palate. Any other lump brands available locally to you? Try RW, OO, FOGO or WGWW. Otherwise try a more neural burning lump. When I first got mine I had the obligatory complimentary 20# of BGE lump and although I let the smoke get clean my reactions were it's too smokey.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

Lose the BGE lump. Tastes like an ashtray dragged through a
Fireplace . Go rockwood. Totally neutral and you can add smoke if you choose. I wouldn't use BGE lump if it were half the price and called Royal Oak....oh wait, it is. I am not a fan of either and find that they give off a very sooty flavor.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX -
Another vote for changing your lump charcoal. Rockwood or Wicked Good Weekend Warrior (WGWW) are about as neutral as I have found. Let the Voc's burn off (smoke smells good, is good is the test) with whatever you use and you should cure the issue. Good luck and don't discount your final option >-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

My wife had the same complaint. Switched to RW and haven't heard a peep. Doing cornbread, pizzas and anything else and no "smokey" flavor.Memphis, TN ----> Chattanooga, TN

I've have a limited sample size, but bge and fogo have had strong smoke flavor. Just received 100 lbs of RW and plan on giving it a try next. I don't mind the flavor on most things, it's the reason I switched from gas to real grilling/cooking! Changing lump is a lot cheaper than changing a wife! X_XLarge BGE - 2014

BGE lump is too smokey. I think it is a huge disappointment for new egg owners not sure what to expect. Without this forum many eggers have probably given up thinking the egg is the problem

I support changing to a neutral lump too. I only use wood chunks on ribs, brisket and pulled pork. I use OO or Hastybake. I've used Rockwood too, but it's not available locally.
Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

Changing lump from your preferred brand seems like a drastic measure. Divorce is the only real solution.Good news, sounds like she'll let you keep the egg in the divorce.Sorry, you clearly said "other than getting rid of her". I don't listen well, which is probably why I'm divorced myself.Phoenix

Is Rockwood or Wicked Good Weekend Warrior available in Georgia? I use Royal Oak from Home Depot and have been satisfied. Cant justify the BGE $$$..lousubcap said:Another vote for changing your lump charcoal. Rockwood or Wicked Good Weekend Warrior (WGWW) are about as neutral as I have found. Check your local ace for Rockwood. They can order it by the bag if they don't stock it. @shaw988

Is that just a GA Store ability, or can any ace get it nationwide? My local doesn't carry it, no one that's conveniently nearby does. Have to drive 3 hours to Dallas for OO, which I have been pleased with, The OO not the drive!Large BGE in Moore, OK -
Its not nationwide for sure. They have a good locator on the website and @stlcharcoal Is the head honcho. Where you stay @maso ?
