Any Suggestions? - Spatchcock Turkey a little too big

I saw so much discussion on spatchcock turkey that I just had to try it this year. I thought the 17 lb bird would fit on the Large BGE but when I took it out of the brine to air-dry, I did a test fitting on my SS grate. Any suggestion on how to best get it to fit?

Can you put something (vrack or anything ) under it in the middle to 'drape' it over to shorten its length ??

I'm in the same boat. I plan on cutting the bird in half and roasting one half on the lower rack and the other on the upper with the plate setter in place. Do you have anyway to run two grates?Edina, MN

You could also just trim the ends of the drumstick off.

Aww heck, just shove the thing in there. The drummies and wings will squeeze in a bit, but I bet you can get it in there.Killen, AL (The Shoals)XL, Small, Minimax, and Mini BGEs

Thanks! I'll get out the vrack and see if that will work. I'm not really interested in the 'presentation', is there any drawback to taking 1-2 inches off the drumstick like Eggcelsior is describing?

Eggcelsior has probably cooked more turkeys on an egg than I've ever eaten !!!!! I've been through 53 Thanksgivings !!!!!

Any thoughts about if I should take the legs right off and just place them next to the bird?BTW I'm planning to do the turkey raised direct at 400.

sounds like a good idea to me if a v-rack does not solve your problem...

I was thinking you could remove the quarters (leg and thigh). With them removed I think you could position them better by rotating them around to use some of the empty space on the right side.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

and after looking at your photo I'm with @BigGreenBamaGriller. I could make that bird fit on a large. I just try to squeeze it in. Although the idea of a rack or something placed underneath to raise the center and shorten it, is a good idea. Maybe a can or a small brick wrapped in foil..."I'm stupidest when I try to be funny"

It looks like the vrack is going to work. At first I was worried about the rectangular part of the stand (the legs when it's used as a "V" for a roast) but the turkey fit right inside them. I think I'm going to go for it and as @TigerTony and @BigGreenBamaGriller mentioned... just squeeze it the rest of the way in.I was thinking of rotating through out the cook to make sure it's cooked even. Thanks for all the help and advice!
