Lump

Is there a difference in lump. I have been buying the lump from Barbecues Galore. I noticed that lots of places sell it. Just wondering if there is a true difference.

I say yes. Try different types and see for yourself, then go with those you like best.

That's kinda like Ford vs Chevy.  Check out this site for lump reviews;   http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramic.htm and answers to about any ceramic cook question you might have. FWIW-
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

So far I've used FOGO and Rockwood. I'd say definitely different. SWMBO says she can't taste a difference.

@henapple swears by Royal Oak. I think he's wrong because I like Rockwood and Ozark Oak but to each their own.

When I first bought my egg, SWMBO didn't like it at all and she thought I was using some spice she didn't like and was asking me to not use it anymore. I couldn't figure which one, the salt or the pepper. Changed charcoal and she loves it. Then we went to eggtoberfest and she recognized that taste she didn't like again. It was the green egg lump which I understand is Royal Oak...just sayin.

If you don't like a lot of charcoal flavor, rock wood is the way to go. Very neutral, you'll have to add wood of choice for smoke flavor.

Try each and every limp you can find. I've tried about 6-8 different limps so far and I'll say they all have different flavors. Agree on Rockwood being the one I like the best. Ozark and Wicked are a close second.

You quoted BBQs Galore, You wouldn't happen to be referring to the Canadian chain would you? If so, you can definitely get your hands on Maple Leaf lump. By far my favourite charcoal.

I bought like 20 bags of KJ when they had it at Costco. I really like it and the price is right. I do like Ozark Oak as well.

Rockwood and Ozark oak are the best I've tried. All others have their pluses and minuses. Stay away from Cowboy at any cost!

I started using cowboy and I will have to say I liked the flavor better also but since have started using OO and Rockwood there has been no complaints. It seems in my comparison the OO was more neutral which seems to be good because if I add different woods for flavor you can actually taste them. But to answer your question, I don't know if she knows what she likes just what she doesn't.

I've used many brands and finally pulled the trigger and got some Rockwood ordered.  Loved how it burned.  Hard to tell on taste because it was on white chicken chili.  Next time I cook something I will see if the wife can tell the difference.  May just fire up both and try a side by side comparison to see the difference.
