Finally Tried My New Looftlighter

Options
That Looftlighter I bought a couple of weeks ago has been patiently waiting to be used. And today it finally got its chance to live up to the hype.

I'm cooking that Prime Brisket we bought yesterday and needed the perfect fire.

Here goes...

image

Oh Look! Fire!!!

image

And Smoke!

image

It worked!!!

Whoa! Back up some...

I held it down in the lump for a long time and couldn't see where it was doing much. I was starting to bad-mouth it when Spring Hen came up, tore a small piece off one of the smoking wood chunks, threw it under the hot end of the Looftlighter and within seconds it was burning. Then it was like ten more seconds for the lump around it to start glowing, then burning and spreading, all within seconds, probably due to the steady blast of hot air coming off the Looftlighter.

Now that I know the secret of how it makes fire, I can give it a thumbs up.

It helps that I got it at 1/3rd the retail price.

It also helps to have a Sweetie with common sense (and patience).

Be careful sticking it down into the coals for more than maybe 12-20 seconds...it will quickly get hot enough to melt the aluminum protective shield. Don't ask how I know that.

Nice cook shack. I bought a looftlighter a while back but have not used it as my electric starter still works great, could you be a little clearer on the process for getting a fire started? I assumed I would just aim it at the lump and pull the button/trigger

    Thanks,

@Grillmagic The video's not mine, but you're pretty much right.  Simply put the end of the looftlighter on the coals, push the button, and hold for 45 seconds or so.

can light multiple spots if you want, hold for longer, etc. etc.  More or less this though:

For those who have not had the privilege to meet The Chickens I can tell you they are the two nicest people to ever open a big Green Egg and more than likely responsible for the sell of more Eggs than any of us.

I like to check out the buyers' reviews on Amazon and I know you'll love this:

"I have used my Looftlighter many times, but never for its intended purpose of lighting charcoal. It works great in the kitchen any time you need controlled, intense heat. I find it easier to control than a torch or broiler for many applications. I hang it on my pot rack for easy access and use it at least a couple of times a week.

I've used mine to toast buns, roast peppers, and melt cheese. I use it to brown the outsides of meats that I have cooked sous vide. It will even caramelize sugar on creme brulee."

(A good number of unhappy reviewers said it stopped working after a year or so. Anyone had experience with that?)

Leroy, I was trying to picture Spring Hen helping you light that fire:

"Spring Hen came up, tore a small piece off one of the smoking wood chunks, threw it under the hot end of the Looftlighter and within seconds it was burning."

Did she use her fingers or tongs? Amazing!
